Domperidone

I'm going to ring my GP tomorrow to ask for domperidone for my low milk supply, but I'm aware they may well say no due to it being off licence. I was just wondering if anyone had been able to get domperidone from anywhere else? (for example a private doctor, or online). I don't like the idea of it being the end of the road if they say no.

(I'm obviously doing everything else possible already, including double pumping with a hospital grade pump 8-10 times a day etc etc)

I did get it from my gp but not at the appointment - he had to contact peers / SCBU and got a prescription 48 hours later.

It didn't work for me but DTs were very early and supply never got going, I do know people it has worked for.

Are your 8-10 pumps including overnight as well?

It includes 130, 430 and 7am as that's when my little one wakes. So frustrating! Once you got an appointment did you have difficulty finding a pharmacy that stocked it?

I had it prescribed by the health visitor for both DCs

The breast feeding midwife at the hospital suggested using it when I was struggling with feeding DS2 (6) . I thought she was bonkers, luckily so did my G.P. I left breastfeeding behind, when another midwife at the drop in suggested an infant feeding system using formula fed through tubes attached to my nipples (to stimulate production whilst feeding formula) which adoptive mothers use to establish milk flow.

I was not hardcore enough. Sometimes you just can't do it.

I got it from GP and it worked for me but recent research has put some off prescribing it. The other things that worked for mewere lots of skin to skin and breast massage when pumping.

Please don't beat yourself over this. I tried for four months to bf. Pumped, drank fennel tea, fed on demand for hours at a time, used domperidone, lots of skin to skin and attended bf clinic. I never managed to bf.
2nd child. I switched to formula after a couple of days. Happy baby and much happier mum.

No not at all, you can buy it OTC as motillium but not in he amounts you need to increase supply.

Thanks all of you. It's no longer available over the counter unfortunately, and the recent MHRA advice is that it shouldn't be prescribed for anything other than nausea and vomiting so I think they might not be keen on letting me have it. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I needn't have worried. The GP was fine about prescribing it. How long did it take before people noticed an effect from it if it did work for you?

It was quite quick, a day or two. I took 10mg 3-4 x daily for three or four months (DS was in NICU).

Took a week for me to see a real improvement though I believe because it works with supply and demand it can take a month to get to a full supply up. If you do stop I'd advise to do so gradually, I was taking 9 pills a day (understanding doc and previous surgery meant I needed a lot!) I stopped taking them cold turkey and had what felt like a huge hormonal crash, frightening as I thought it was the start of pnd (luckily not). It's been documented as an effect but as high doses haven't been studied as much it's not as known. Good luck.
