Anyone had a breast lump biopsy while bf?

I had a biopsy on a lump yesterday (they're pretty sure it's nothing to worry about). The procedure was quick and painless but I now have 2 holes from the needle that need to heal up and breast milk keeps pouring out whenever I have a let down.

I'm using moist wound healing plasters on top of the steri strips as no point trying to keep it dry (hospital put a gauze plaster on and said to keep the area clean and dry and take off the strips after 2-3 days). I'm replacing the plasters a couple of times a day/when there has been a lot of leakage.

Also having to feed DS in a weird uncomfortable position on that side as the wound/plaster is in just the wrong place.

Has anyone else had this? Did it heal up quickly? How long should I avoid feeding from that area, worried that when I take the dressings off feeding will open it back up again.

I saw your thread title and wanted to come bounding in to reassure you that it's fine, I even took DD to the clinic and its was super easy. And then I read your post and you have a slightly more complex issue

I think I must've only had a fine needle aspiration last time as I didn't have holes, and certainly not holes that milk could pour out of.

I imagine if left alone it will heal up pretty quickly (I had a biopsy done a few years ago). Could you express from that side to maintain your supply and feed baby from the other?

Have you tried the rugby hold or a biological nursing position? It's hard to advise without knowing where the holes are.

Yes they did a fine needle aspiration at first as they thought it was a galactocele (sp) but it was solid (probably fibroadenoma) so they took 2 samples with a bigger needle - made a stapler noise when the sample was taken did you have that one? I don't think it was massive but I have been too squeamish to look at the cuts directly but definitely breast milk dripping out have soaked through breast pads and when I got out the shower and took the dressing off to change it drops were dripping out and it was definitely milk coloured rather than the usual wound weeping clear/yellow. Maybe the needle went through a duct or something? I'm hoping the amazing properties of breast milk will make it heal up really quickly though!

I usually feed in biological position or lying down on that breast but the wound is right underneath the nipple so I can't. Can't do cradle as that is exactly where the lump is so it doesn't drain the breast well and gets sore. Rugby position I could try, haven't done it for ages as DS is a massive chubster and difficult to get in that position. I've been lying down on my back with him on his front at right angles to me so in Rugby position but lying down! Also tried kneeling and dangling boob in his face this morning Doesn't hurt particularly (am taking painkillers for the bruising) but just feels really weird and makes me tense so want to get back to normal positions asap!

I don't get much out expressing and the pump would go over the wound again so don't really want to try it unless necessary. Luckily DS is 6 months now so I'm doing the minimum on that side and letting him have the other side much more.

So if anyone in future is reading this before a biopsy - ask them where they are going to insert the needles and if that will interfere with your normal feeding position it's worth asking if there's an alternative way in!

I've had that kind of biopsy before, but last time (while bf) I just had FNA. I have lumpy boobs so have been a fair few times

I wonder if by 6 months (if you've EBF up to now) you could skip a fair few feeds on that side to let it heal without compromising your supply. The ladies on the infant feeding board would know better.

I've always had lumpy boobs too but have ignored them . Kind of nice to know that the procedure is so easy though I will be much quicker to get any new lumps checked in future.

Yes I think my supply shouldn't issue at this stage, the good side is the 'dummy' sleep booby so has always had more use!

Well don't ignore them in future! It's very important.

I'd give the sore boob a day off and see how you go. Maybe you could hand express for comfort if required.

I think it's mainly closed up now Anything, no dripping, though the skin still has raw puncture marks and half my breast is red with yellow bruising at the edges . I'm a bit worried about mastitis as I am not feeling great but don't seem to have lumps so hopefully just normal lack of sleep / headache / stress! Rugby position worked well too.

Off to the docs first thing tomorrow hopefully get my millionth course of thrush treatment anyway so they can have a check.

Fingers crossed by the end of the week I'll be feeling better
