HELP! my bottle fed baby will only feed when asleep at night rest of time each feed is a battle with cyring and screaming for 15 mins before eventually takes bottle! Been given Ranitidine for babies in case it is REFLUX? Anyone else had this problem? How long does it last and how long does it take for Ranititidine to work? How can I stop her feeding through the night and not feeding through the day?

hi - how old is your baby? My DS has silent reflux so i have had many bottle battles. When DS refused the bottle i would leave for a few mins and try again. he would take 1 - 2 oz and then leave it. I would offer little and often and don't worry about LO not taking a whole feed in one go. I am afraid you may have to grin and bear it for a while. It does calm down ... when my LO was about 14/15 weeks his reflux improved as his digestive system matured and he got more upright.

Ranitadine is an antacid and stops the burning pain that happens when the milk comes back up. It takes about 5 days to work ... it is very weight dependent so the dose needs to be adjusted every time LO puts on about 1 lb.

Try to elevate the cot/changing table etc. Also keep LO upright for as long as possible after feeds (or in abouncy chair etc).

HTH.

DD is 10 weeks and sounds identical to your LO. thanks for the tips....I feels like I'm going mad as GP kept telling me DD wouldn't starve herself yet she goes frequently through the day upto 10 hours with only 2ounces! The Dr at hospital who gave Ranitidine said my Dd's reflux was also silent ie she isn't sick! I'm glad I'm not alone. thanks Taylorama

ranitidine never worked for us and neither did gaviscon. went back to gp and he gave losec/omeprazole (2 names for one thing) and domperidone instead.

feed in a bolt upright position and keep upright for 30 mins after feed (i normally put ds in his car seat) also raise cot.

are you ff?if so what milk are you using? i tried all the thickening stay down milks to no avail - what did help was switching to cow and gate organic formula.
