It started today very suddenly temp v high feel awful lump the size of kiwi!

Gp has prescribed antibitocs over the phone and I have to go and see her tomorrow as she is concerned about an abscess.

Does anyone know how the gp would diagnose or how they feel different.

Last time I had mastitis for 4 weeks so feeling v miserable and tearful! Plus supposed to be going away tomorrow :(

I can sympathise with you 100%. I've had mastitis and it's awful.
I'm not sure how they tell the difference but I really hope it's not an abscess as draining them is supposed to be agony.
Keep nursing on that breast to unclog the duct and try submerging the breast in a hot bath whilst massaging the lump. Good luck xx

I had a similar sized lump with mastitis. I was really worried as usually I can clear a blocked duct with self management in 24 hours but this lasted about 4 days. The GP felt it and immediately said not to worry it was a blocked duct. He gave me another prescription for antibiotics as I was going away the next day in case it didn't shift and caused more mastitis. I think an abscess would be quite red and sore.
Lots of feeding and it shifted the next day.
keeping my fingers crossed for you OP

I had an abscess after mastitis and over a few days basically the lh side of my boob went rock solid- definitely more than a lump ( though it started like one). Don't panic if it is though- draining it was very quick and totally bearable (and this is from someone who had an epidural for childbirth!), and my boob went right back to normal swiftly afterwards (I had two drains a week apart). Didn't interfere with breastfeeding either.
Hope the antibiotics kick in and that you start to feel much better soon.

Sorry for your pain. Mastitis is awful. I too had it for weeks and there was a concern about an abscess; I was referred for an ultrasound to check. I didn't have one, although not sure that was a relief as having my boob drained sounded heavenly after 3 weeks of red, angry, solid agony!
