mastitis misery

Fuck fuck fuck it hurts. Woke up in the middle of the night in agony, been like it since. Have tried hot baths, helps for a bit but makes me feel faint so can't stay in there for long. Been trying to empty the breast but just don't seem to be getting anywhere, have tried getting baby to feed - she does but the boob is still gigantic - tried to hand express, can't get anything out, tried breast pump and get a little but it's thick (like milky snot!) and I get hardly anything.

Got a gp appointment on Fri afternoon. Chewing paracetamol and ibroprufen like smarties.

Help?!

Can you go see an out of hours doctor? Mastitis can turn nasty very quickly and you may need antibiotics (if there's an infection, symptoms would include a fever).
Hope you feel better soon! I've had it twice, I know how unpleasant it can be Sad

How do you get an out of hours doctor?

Been taking my temperature so know I'm not getting a fever. Will call docs in the morning if still bad and try for an emergency appt.

Really bad timing as I'm back at work full time on Monday! How quickly did it clear up for you magpie?

Call 111 if your surgery is closed. Would really echo above advice to get antibiotics started asap.

MagpieCursedTea · 08/04/2015 18:37

I started feeling better about 24 hours after starting antibiotics. 111 should be able to put you in touch with out of hours but if you've not got a fever and think you can hang on until the morning, then phone your GP first thing.

My GP was happy to write me a prescription after speaking on phone and telling him my symptoms. Try to speak to someone as soon as you can. You have my sympathies, it's horrible Flowers

Spoken to 111 and got an emergency appt for this evening. Thanks for the help guys Flowers

Have you tried hand e pressing whilst in the bath? I found that the only way to clear the blockage causing the problem, and even that took a day or two. Lots of milky snot, but getting it out helped. Hope your Dr appt goes well, mastitis is awful.

MagpieCursedTea · 08/04/2015 19:43

Glad you got an appointment, let us know how you get on if you get the chance.

BossWitch · 08/04/2015 21:28

Well done for getting through to the Dr with antibiotics you will be better soon... i suggest pumping or hand expressing as much as possible - I found it much better to get that goo out!!

BossWitch · 09/04/2015 11:45

Cheers JP. Have given up trying to hand express, I cant do it, it ain't happening. Am feeding the baby as often as she'll let me and - fair warning, this next bit is gross - actually sucked some out myself while I was in the bath earlier this morning.

Antibiotics are definitely working, not feeling feverish any more and not as painful, though still swollen and red.
