Feeding twins

Hi,

Just wondered if anybody had had twins and how you fed them. I bf DS for several months, but not sure I could manage to bf two. I know some people do, but not sure it's for me, particularly as I'll have an almost 3 year old to look after as well. Having said that, formula is expensive!

Any experiences?

A girl I know Breast feeds one twin and expresses for the other from the other side while twin 1 is feeding. In the first few weeks she topped up twin 2 with some formula and spilt the expressed formula to build up a stash.

I breast fed mine until my DH returned to work full time at about 4 weeks. I found it two difficult to tandem as being bigger chested it ment that I had to hold the beast at a good position for feeding. The number of times I wished I had a 3rd arm!!! My toddler was just too high maintenance to allow me the time to feed one baby and then the other. I then expressed until my supply dwindled and now at 5 months old they are on formula. The formula is costing us £30 a week on it's own :-( but they are as happy and healthy babies as I could wish for :-) and it won't be long until they start weaning!

Omg! Apologies for the spelling and grammar. Having twins also rots your brain!!!

Hi, my DTDs were prem and my milk supply not very good so I bottle fed.

I breastfeed both my 16 week old twins. I tend to tandem feed them in the evening and over night, but feed singly at other times. To be honest, I can't imagine bottle feeding them, it would take so much time with sterilusing and making up feeds, plus having to take loads of bottles out with us if we are away for the day.
It was tough to begin with, my milk was late coming in due to blood loss during my section. I had to pump to build up my supply, and give top up feeds to the girls, but by the time we left the hospital they were exclusively breast fed.
It can be time consuming, and I can imagine it may be tricky with a toddler. Have you considered using slings? I have heard that some twin mums feed while in a stretchy wrap, which would allow you more freedom to move around and help your other wee one. I just parked myself on the sofa with Netflix for the first few weeks to he honest.

It is possible, and in the long run, easy to breastfeed twins, so long as you have support in the early stages and know what to expect. I recommend reading 'mothering multiples ' by Karen Gromada it's a great book about breastfeeding and raising twins.

I combine fed mine until they were 6 months old. Mainly fed them together and one reason I stopped bf was because it was getting difficult to tandem feed ... If you do decide to bf, get a decent cushion which helped me a lot.
