Milk at 10 months

Hi

Ds is BF, at nursery full time and has 2 bottles of expressed milk during the day then bf all other times.

I am starting to struggle to express enough for him. I can only get 4oz. He is reducing his daytime milk himself on weekends.

He is coming up to 10 months.
I am only planning to feed him til he is 1 then move him onto cows milk.
Could he have cows milk already for his nursery bottles/cups or would that count as his main drink? He eats well and I don't particularly want to start giving formula.

Or should I just keep expressing and keep him on the 4oz?

My DD is just 11months and has been at nursery full time for the past month. She has never drank EBM and manages fine on solids/water during the day. She bf morning and pre bed, usually one overnight. During the weekend she feeds on demand.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 24/03/2015 22:25

How many times a day is he feeding roughly?

Anaffaquine · 24/03/2015 22:31

Don't go onto cows milk yet, use formula if your supply is dwindling too much.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 24/03/2015 22:33

I don't think that the op gave any indication that her supply was dwindling, did she, or is that just me missing something?

Personally I think it's fine to offer a little cows milk in the day at this age if your child is in daycare and is bf at all other times. I did this from 10 and 9 months in the advice of a BFC.

PuppyMummy · 25/03/2015 08:26

on a nursery day he feeds 3 times in the day, first thing, when we get home and bedtime and 2/3 times during the night and the 2 bottle of expressed.

on a weekend, the same but no bottles would hav 2/3 bfs during the day.

My supply when bf is fine. DS is starting to reduce milk himself, he sometimes just has a little 5 min sip! my issue is that im struggling to get a decent amount off when expressing at work.

Im seeing the hv for his 8-12m review over easter so I will ask her advice too.

I dont really want to give formula at this point.

Why are you wanting to avoid formula? I probably wouldn't give cows milk until 12 months.

LittleRedDinosaur · 25/03/2015 08:34

I think formula is better than cows milk nutritionally at this age but I gave DD cow's milk at 10 months as she wouldn't take formula and I struggled to express. She was fine! Any reason why you wouldn't give formula?

LittleRedDinosaur · 25/03/2015 08:35

Just to add that I gave cows milk in addition to breast milk

PuppyMummy · 25/03/2015 11:37

only because he has only had bm and am so close to him having cows milk full time I don't want to add formula into the mix too.

Thanks for the advice so far.

My dd started with the cm at 10mo. She was on 1 daytime feed and had formula for about a month, then just moved onto cows milk.

I spoke to the HV about it and ironically she encouraged water rather than cows milk, but also said as I had already introduced milk in cheese etc, it wouldn't be dangerous.

I took the decision that 3 feeds a week just a month or so before the guidance changed would be fine.

PuppyMummy · 27/03/2015 11:49

have sent him today with one bottle of ebm and one of cows milk. he was off ill yesterday and with me so I couldn't express!

Have decided ill keep expressing and he can hav one bottle of expressed and one of cows. then I don't hav to stress over how much I'm expressing.

Thanks for the advice.
