How long before breasts back to normal after stopping breastfeeding?

For various reasons, over the last couple of days I have stopped breastfeeding after 8 months (sob) I've not fed for 24 hours and my breasts are killing me!

How long before the pain stops? Will I have to express any? Is there anything I can do to make the process more comfortable?

Oh, and if I change my mind, what's the point of no return?

No hard and fast rule

Hot shower and squeezing boobs takes pressure off

Thanks Baby.

Any idea roughly? Are we talking days or weeks?

Ooooo don't remember!

First 3-4 days tough. Then progressively better.

Did you phase it out gradually? I did 1 feed only for 2 weeks before quitting.

I may have done one final feed 3 days after quitting.

Thanks. I've kind of gone cold turkey. I have been doing the final feed with formula for a while now but I've just switched the rest to formula. I found with breastfeeding there was no pattern or routine, DS just snacked a lot so it was difficult to replace feed by feed.
They are so sore now. I've expressed a little bit but I've never been great at expressing so not much is coming out!

When I stopped I expressed a bit to cut down gradually. I think I started with 3times a day, then after a couple of days 2, then 1. I think I stopped completely somewhere between a week and 2. Was fine and only remember a bit of tenderness and one leaking incident! Dd was 4 months though so I may have been feeding more regularly than you.

Just to warn you I do remember feeling quite down and some hair loss, both of which I assume were down to hormonal change. Neither were drastic though and didn't last long.

I just stopped breasts feeding 6 days ago and I was in agony!!!!! It lasted for 2 days and then it slowly subsided each day after.
I found that cold cabbage leaves helped me and I drunk 4 cups of sage tea each day. If it gets really painful just express a small amount in the shower to ease it slightly. It will get better!!
