My DS (6 weeks) is being trialled on hypoallergenic formula for a suspected CMP allergy which could alternatively be reflux (or maybe both). We were initially prescribed Nutramigen and despite him rejecting it 80% of the time on the dieticians advice we persevered with it for a few days but noticed no improvement in symptoms. We were then prescribed Neocate which we started using last Friday. He took to Neocate much better but by Sunday PM the teeny tub they gave us had run out and we still hadn't noticed any improvement in his symptoms. By this time he'd been dairy free for almost 6 days and dietician had said that within 48 hours we should see improvements.
So, we decided to go back to Aptamil yesterday afternoon. First feed (ready made) was fine but immediately after the second feed (powder) his symptoms got worse and have stayed that way ever since even though we returned to the Nutramigen as we still had some of that left until I could speak to the GP again today. Neither DS nor I have slept as he's been roused every 5-10 mins obviously in pain. He groans and writhes around, kicking legs and arching back. He's very sicky and been whimpering and crying on and off for hours.
Now I don't know what to think, I'm confident that there was no significant improvement in his symptoms when on Neocate but in retrospect maybe it was doing something. If it was an allergy though I thought we would see a noticeable improvement? He's definitely worse than ever now though. Those of you whose babies have had an allergy to cows milk protein, what do you think? Should I have seen a discernible difference and can returning to ordinary formula somehow make things worse than ever before or is it coincidence?
Sorry this has turned out to be so long, I'm so utterly baffled and lost by this being a mum business and feeling a bit useless today!
