Very windy bf 4wk old - help please

Not sure this is the right place for this but my four week old DS is mostly bf (might have a formula or ebm feed once a day) and really struggles to bring up his wind. We have to wind him for ages and sometimes nothing will come up. He will then visibly start straining, going red, crying, and will have difficulty feeding. He needs comfort sometimes so I try to latch him on but he will come off, squirm, maybe cry and generally be unhappy. We are struggling to get him down after a night feed bacause he is uncomfortable and his straining stops him sleeping. I give him Infacol & gripe water but have seen no difference. I do wind him between breasts but as I say, sometimes he won't bring anything up.

Has anyone got any ideas? It's really disrupting his sleep, as well as ours, and he is getting so overtired and cranky during the day. I feel so useless as a mum for not being able to help him. All help gratefully received!

If he's uncomfortable straight after each feed, could it be reflux? maybe a trip to the GP to check that out would be a good idea.

Out of interest what is making you so sure that it's wind if he's not bringing much wind up?

Both mine were fairly squirmy and uncomfortable looking for the first 6 weeks or so, it seems it can be just a developmental thing as their digestive system gets used to eating IYSWIM.

I had to walk around with DS2 or have him in a sling for a bit sometimes till he settled down and would latch again.

Hope it settles down for you too. Smile

Why would this be wind? Babies are squirmy and grunty when they are young....endless patting and jiggling and so on can be disturbing, when all they want is a cuddle and maybe more bf ;) What happens if you just bf him to sleep?
