Switching from Nutramigen to SMA

My son has been on Nutramigen since he was a month or 2 old, HV recommended it as he was very constipated and sicky, he wouldn't sleep at night as he was uncomfortable and
would just grunt in pain all night so she thought he might have an intolerance.

As soon as we switched over there was an instant improvement, he would poo every day, sleep all night and is an all round much happier baby. Went to the doctors when he was 6 months said

Sorry cut off half way through lol!

They said that I should try him on normal formula again as most babies grow out of it so i started him on SMA follow on milk last night (he's had four bottles of 8oz) so far and he hasn't poo'd yet! He usually goes 10am every day, I really hope he's not gonna get constipated again, anyone had any experience switching back to regular formula?

Could you try SMA first (stage 1) formula rather than the follow on? Follow on has extra iron which might be contributing to the constipation.

I would use first milk and would maybe have phased the new milk in gradually

I didn't realise that he could stay on the first milk, because the follow on said 6 months plus I just assumed he had to be on that, now that I've started him I don't want to keep switching him, he did a poo yesterday and the day before and they're more formed rather than running out of his nappy everywhere, he seems to be doing well on it so far, as long as he's not getting constipated i'm happy Smile it's such a relief that he's not intolerant and that he's outgrown it, yay Grin x

yes, first milk is ok for the whole of the first year and follow on was only invented to get round the ban on advertising the first milk. I did switch to follow on around 9 months as it was cheaper and you could get offers on it.

Glad he seems to be coping ok with the milk now Smile
