Questions about ranitidine

Hi all! My week old baby has just been prescribed ranitidine for awful silent reflux. I have a few questions though... Is there any reason why we can't mix the ranitidine dosage into her formula rather than just squirt directly into her mouth? Also, she is on 3.75ml three times a day, does this sound about right to you?

Also, how long did it take to work?! Please can someone tell me it's almost immediate haha

That dosage sounds high to me, mine was on 1ml 3x a day.

It’s 1-3mg per kg of babys weight. Then convert to ml by checking the bottle - is it 150mg / 10ml?

For example a 5kg baby can have between 5-15mg which is 0.3 - 1ml x 3 times a day.

It worked quickly for us in terms of vomiting, but took time for her throat to heal as she was bad for weeks before we were prescribed anything.

Shit, now I am worried! The doc has definitely written 3.75ml, not mg , three times daily. Do you think this is a mistake and he meant 3.75mg?! Now I'm worried we have given her far too much!

She is about 3.75kg at the mo, what the fuck has the doc done?!

Ooh that dosage is very high! Have it checked! My DS was on it when tiny and is now on it again at 14months and is on 4mls a day!

He was on about 0.5ml 3 times a day at 10 weeks and that gradually increased.

Allstoppedup · 18/02/2015 13:06

I wouldn't worry too much as a one off but it is all calculated as per their weight. It may be she needs a very high dosage but that seems like a lot. Get some clarification but try not to panic. How many of those doses has she had?

Micah · 18/02/2015 13:06

Phone or nip in to a pharmacist to get it checked.

In the meantime don't worry if you've given too high a dose, won't do any harm :)

Ranitidine never stopped my dd from vomiting but it totally stopped her screaming with pain.
She had 1ml three times daily from 6 weeks old.

Micah · 18/02/2015 13:08

Eta: it will depend on the concentration too- 3.75 mls of 0.5mg/ml is a lot less than 3.75 mls of 1mg/ml, so it may not be too much.

I think mine only had 1ml/day, but it was a strong solution as I struggled to get it down her.

:)

Also ask the pharmacist re. Mixing it in formula.

LL0015 · 18/02/2015 13:09

Oh and don't mix it I think you're supposed to give it before the feed if I remember. Dd now almost 8

Waffles80 · 18/02/2015 13:22

As a previous poster has said, it depends on the make up of the medicine and how concentrated it is in the liquid form. Double check with GP just to reassure yourself.

It took a week to help my twins, but the difference was significant.

My ds is on 1.3ml a day at 5 months and started on around 1ml at 2ish months. I think it's supposed to be given before a feed and gaviscon with (in bottle) or after (on spoon) if bf'ing. We saw an improvement in his pain from silent reflux within a few days. I would check the dose out as I think my ds was on the max dose for weight. His med is 75mg per 5ml solution but it may vary.

Jemimapuddleduk · 18/02/2015 13:25

Sorry meant to read 1.3 ml three times a day. Started on 1ml three times a day.

ireallydontlikemonday · 18/02/2015 13:32

That does sound like a lot, I cant remember what mine were on but we only had tiny 1ml syringes to begin with.

You need to givce it before a feed, ideally 20-40 mins if you can time it right, not mix with the formula.

Turned by twins from miserable babies who were in pain into very happy spitters. They had domperidone which helped ith the vomit, but I believe they don't prescribe it anymore.

hoppus · 18/02/2015 14:02

Does the bottle say 150mg/10ml or something else? I’d take it into a pharmacy and double check.

TheToadLessTravelled · 19/02/2015 00:11

Worked within a week with my babies, both on 1ml 2 times a day when they started it at several months old and they are big babies. I just used a small disposable sterile syringe (terrumo about £10 a box online). Worth mentioning that once opened ranitidine starts deteriorating after a month so you need regular repeats and make sure you are given a whole sealed bottle each time.

juniorcakeoff · 19/02/2015 13:39

Mine is on max dose, weighs approx 15lb, 1.5ml 3 times a day of 150mg in 10ml solution. Hope this helps.
