terrified blood in nappy

dd is 4 months. Just changed a bm nappy - she did 3 in a row, not too runny and normal colour. But one had blood in it. Going to gp now.

What sort of blood? Dark, tarry blood? Red-currant jellyish? Bright red streaks?

Don't panic just yet. My DS was rushed to A&E after three episodes of blood in his stools - he had gastroenteritus.

There are lots of reasons for blood in nappies and a lot of them are not serious. She might have a little tear - has she been straining?

Yes lots of strain farts prior to poo.

Just some red spots. On the app so can't post a photo but there are 2 in a normal yellow wet poo. Pinky red.

Blood that still looks like blood usually means it has come from near the "exit" point. Ds used to get it. Never found out why but nothing sinister was found.

Yes I am hoping it's like the pink marks mummy used to get after pooing post partum ie a bum scratch.

She's only a small for her age thing so the idea of a stomach problem scares me.

At GP now. She seems happy enough.

How did the appointment go?

IIRC, bright red blood is not serious as it's deemed to have come from the outer surface (exit). Red-currant jelly can be an indication of inflamation/irritation in the bowel or gut which is, more often than not, due to a bug. (A poo consisting of only red-currant jelly blood can indicate a serious intestinal problem). Black, tarry blood is a lot more concerning as it can be an indication of large amounts of blood being digested.

We had a similar panic and rushed to doctors once... Turned out a tiny bit of DSS' creme egg wrapper had got on the floor and DD must have eaten it. The subsequent nappy had said wrapper - must have scratched her a little.

GP spotted a tiny fissure.

Have been sent away with ointment, and advised to look out for any more blood or gastric discomfort. It could be an allergy but there's no echsma or gastric discomfort so unlikely.
Much more likely sore bum + spot of blood = sore bum made blood spot.

DD is older (15 months) and had blood in her nappy this morning. After my initial panic I realised that she had been straining to poo and it was as hard as a bowling ball so I'm assuming she has a fissure too. Seeing blood coming from your baby is horrifying, I remember when I phoned the GP hysterical as DD threw up blood at a few weeks old, before realising the blood had come from a crack on my nipple

Yes the GP mentioned blood in milk from an internal or external nipple crack was possible.

Anyway she's had a feed at 7pm then asleep within 5 min of being put in her sleepyhead, straight after milk. So that rules out "flexing" and pain from food. Which the dr said would be there with infection or allergy.

Fingers crossed it's just that one big poo.
She had 5 feeds last night and 2 massive feeds earlier today (4 months) so her poo was BIG.

its scary isnt it!? But that all sounds positive, if you can see where its coming from, and your dd doesnt seem to be in pain. The first time my ds had blood in his nappy the hv was very blase about it, i think its fairly common as a one off sign of something not too serious like a nick from straining. it was pretty unhelpful in our case as it was a symptom of cmpa but he was clearly in pain from it. Just shows though, that its more common than you might think! (Can also, for example, be a sign of milk oversupply)

Ruth she had just had a few days of mega feeding ... I wonder if she'd stimulated temporary over supply? I guess the volume would irritate her gut/bum.

how are things squizita? I'm not an expert (but i've done a lot of reading this past 3 months!) but i think if it were oversupply or something else which had irritated her gut it would take more than one bowel movement for the blood to clear and gut to heal, that's certainly what happens with my ds when i've accidentally had some milk and he's reacted.

She's not pooed yet (this is not an issue as she pooes 2-3 daily) but no pain or writhing and her wee tum is soft.
Her bum is less pink too with the ointment.

update!

She's just done a big normal runny poo after 3 days (so not the runs) - no blood but quite a bit of DHs wiry chest hair. She grabs and chews anything so no more low buttoned elvis shirts for dh its the stig suit for baby play (joke).
May well be What had scratched her.

She literally chews anything at the moment. Probably chomped it up during a night feed burpy when dh was just in his pj bottoms. (They should have a Boak emoticon).
