One sore nipple

Hello. My son is 24 hours old. I have already managed to balls up the feeding. I have latched him on and off my right side too much trying to get the latch perfect so now it is really sore. Would it be ok to just feed from my left for a day and hand express from my right side to give it a break or will this ruin my supply? I am furious with myself!

Any advice?

You won't ruin your supply don't worry - just express by hand if too sore - it will just be drops though. If you have a small (1ml) syringe you can use that to feed the expressed stuff and just feed normally on the non sore side. Don't beat yourself up this in no way counts as a balls up

Thank you for replying. I now have 2 really sore nipples. I really wwnt to keep going with it though. If I put up with the pain and use creams etc will it eventually go if I get help to sort my latch out?

I remember being very sore to start with but lanisoh is your friend. You can keep going and it won't hurt always once his latch is sorted and you're toughened up a bit!

Congrats on your new baby

A bit of soreness could be normal but is the latch ok? Is baby opening wide enough? Maybe get latch checked.

You don't want sore nipples getting worse. Congrats on new baby too!

Thanks. The latch looks right but can't be. I can't get him to open his mouth wide enough to get enough in. I have done everything I have been told to.
I have a maternity support worker coming out this morning and am going to go to an infant feeding drop in in the morning so hopefully they can tell me what is going wrong. Thanks again.

Have they helped at all OP? Hope you're doing alright

butternut22 · 20/01/2015 14:02

Hi Sephy. Yes thanks apparently my latch is ok. They have told me to hold my breast in his mouth because he is slipping off during the feed and this has helped. I am just covering my nips in Lansinoh and gritting my teeth when he latches on but am surviving. Thanks for your advice. I was sobbing at the infant feeding drop in which was embarrassing but I feel more positive today.
