Chimichanga Leic asked me to breastfeed in toilet!

Outraged at suggestion in new chimichanga Leicester tht I would breastfeed my 10 week old daughter in the toilet downstairs! Have emailed the restaurant and complained - but how can this happen in this day and age?!?
The waiter seemed horrified that I would want to feed at a table and said people normally feed in the toilet downstairs!

I guess they must also eat their lunch in the loo.

iamsofuckingfurious · 25/11/2014 12:55

Did they ask you to feed in the toilet or tell you that other people usually feed in the toilet? Two very different scenarios. The first is illegal, the second is possibly a misguided waiter trying to be helpful.

squizita · 25/11/2014 13:04

I would contact head office.
Possibly a staff training issue - a memo going round reminding staff that if a premises allows babies they allow breastfeeding would prevent it happening again.
I guess if you're a youngster who has never considered baby care you'd just repeat what you thought was normal/the rules.

bigbluestars · 25/11/2014 14:17

It depends on the conversation- did you ask to breastfeed? Did the waiter interrupt you breastfeeding or ask you to stop or move?

Telling you that most women feed in the toilet isn't actually breaking any rules- it may well be true.

hcat123 · 25/11/2014 14:18

Nope. He definitely said - you can't do that here, but you can feed in the toilet downstairs.

Shocking, what did you say back to him?

SassySugarCane · 25/11/2014 14:21

Hope you told him where to go with that idea?

lucidlady · 25/11/2014 14:26

That's outrageous. What did you say to him?

5madthings · 25/11/2014 14:31

What did you say to him? Did you complain?

RightyTightyLeftyLoosey · 25/11/2014 14:32

That's just shitty. I would have laughed in his face!
I am really Angry on your behalf op that pisses me right off.

If I was anywhere near you I'd be there like a shot (wonder what he would say to me bfing a 2 1/2 yr old!)

bigbluestars · 25/11/2014 14:36

If you lived in Scotland you could have called the police and had him arrested. Here that is a criminal offence.

hcat123 · 25/11/2014 14:53

I was having an already poop day free buggy had cal lapsed... I was v speachless and my partner just said, this is ridiculous - we are going somewhere else. Worth saying we went to Mem Saab instead and they were lovely and couldn't have been more helpful :))

It's illegal to ask you to move for feeding. Anywhere you and your baby are entitled to be, you can feed.

Please follow this up - it may well be a staff training issue, rather than a daft and outdated policy.

Your local paper would be interested, too, but of course that means pictures and idiots commenting online that you are an attention-seeker or disgusting blah blah blah.

hcat123 · 25/11/2014 16:09

Don't want pictures- not my thing - I'm a new mum and don't look so good these days!

petalsandstars · 25/11/2014 16:25

John lewis are fab for bf mums - Definitely take it further with head office as it's awful behaviour from the waiter

katandkits · 25/11/2014 16:28

In your written complaint tell them that they were in breach of the 2010 equality act. it is illegal to ask you not to feed in a public place.

squizita · 25/11/2014 16:56

I would ask outright: do they intend on displaying a policy of no babies/mums, or will they retrain staff. I would also point out how disgusting it is expecting a baby - with lower immunity than an adult - to eat in a toilet. Some people need to have it spelt out!!

Pelicangiraffe · 25/11/2014 17:00

Outrageous!!! The waiter should be shot. Seriously!!

hcat123 · 25/11/2014 17:14

I have made a written complaint and let's see what happens... Hopefully the staff just need a little training!
