Formula feeding - what constitutes an 8oz feed?

Silly question I'm sure, but what IS an 8oz feed. Is it 8oz of water mixed with 8 scoops of formula, or is that a 9oz feed, as that's what it goes to once mixed?

8oz feed = 8oz water + 8oz formula. Confusing, isn't it??!!

Hi, yep you are right, 8oz of water and 8 scoops is an 8oz bottle - its just looks like 9 ounces because of the powder making the water level rise. I used to get really confused with all that - but numbers are not my strong point!

But if you use a carton and about 7 oz comes out, does that mean it is really more like 6 and a bit oz?

I never understood this either. If 9oz of prepared milk is actually an 8oz feed because of the amount of water that went into it, presumably a 9oz carton would also be 'really' 8oz. This must be the case surely, because the boxes and cartons both state that 100ml of prepared milk has the same amount of calories, etc.

i can actually feel my brain melting trying to work this out....my 3month old LO has 7oz, and i have never even look at how many ounces there afre after i mixed it.....uurrghhh

beaner07 is right it only goes up to the 9oz line when the powder is added to the water.

8oz bottle is 8oz or 240ml water with 8 scoops of powder.

does this just go for formula, or if you are giving expressed bm, and are told to give a 4 oz feed, should you give 5oz?!?! or is 4oz of bm 4oz!!

If someone told me to give an 8oz feed then if it was formula I would mix up whatever it said I should for 8oz of water (recognising the actual liquid level would be over 8oz). If it was EBM or cowsmilk I'd give 8oz up to the line.

On the basis that the EBM and cows milk is 'pure' milk, while the formula is watery...does that make any sense?

Also...why does it matter that much? Don't you just give them however much they want/need?

Only reason I've been wondering is coz I've read she should be taking 20oz milk inclusive of milk in cooking now she's 9 mths, and she's not drinking anywhere near that much so am trying to add it all up as accurately as I can.
