Changing from ff+bf to ebf

My cousin is trying to stop ff her 3 wo, atm baby bf only for a few minutes and falls asleep, and gets very cranky when hungry so gets a bottle (ordered by hospital when loosing weight on day 4). My cousing is desperate to ebf. Any body with experience of changing at this point? What could she try/definitely do/ not do?

It is possible. The best thing you can do is to be supportive, whatever she decides. There's some info here on weaning from the formula if you feel able to give it to her.

The best thing you can do though is to get her some RL support. Stopping formula and moving to ebf can be done but it will be easier for her with some good local support from a BFC. There are sone details of the support available here, details of local Bfing groups here and details of La Leche League groups here.

I exclusively expressed when my milk came in then moved on to breastfeeding with nipple shields (still using them now @ 7wks). This helped to keep my supply up, that might be worthwhile & means baby getting breadtmilk albeit from a bottle?

DS still falls asleep at boob, Midwives told me to (gently) blow on face, tickle feet & lay them on a towel instead of a pillow to help keep them awake to feed.

Hope that helps - sounds like you are being great support to her.

Fckthis have you managed to get your friend on here yet?

How much weight loss was there? Has it settle down yet?

I mixed fed dc1 for 5 weeks then ebf. I just cut out the one daytime bottle first then cut the night time ones.

The drs and HVs I found were v quick to suggest top ups so I had to do all the research myself

Also with the weight gain are they definitely using the BF baby weight charts

Thank you all. Baby isn't loosing weight anymore, only lost 100grm in the first week, but she was small so not sure what percentage that was.
When that happened to us I was guided in cup feeding DS, which was horrible and made him all the more keen to bf, not sure why my cousin was immediately told to go and buy bottles instead Hmm
She is going to see a latch on group next week ( not sure why the wait...) and hopefully she can follow that kellymom method.

I've never seen a nipple shield, will suggest that to her too.

Thanks
