Cefalexin - ok when pg but not when BF?

Hello

I have been suffering from a urine infection and have been prescribed Cefalexin (Tenkorex is the brand name I think). I am also 14 weeks pg and BF dd (18 mths) from time to time.... probably once a day tops now.

I checked that the medicine is safe to take while pg but I assumed that this would mean it was ok when BF and didn't think to ask. Apparently this is not the case and medical advice should be sought before you BF as it passes into the milk. I can't get hold of a GP and I can't find this info in the BNF. Can anyone help? Bit of a longshot, I know.

Many thanks

Hi dolly it says here that they are ok but I would double check with gp

Women can continue to breastfeed while taking cefalexin [BNF 50, 2005; Micromedex, 2006]. Low concentrations are present in breast milk, which may cause changes to the bacteria in the infant's gastrointestinal tract.

from an nhs site

Thanks very much girls. I am on a slightly higher dose than the one suggested by the website (500mg x3 time a day) but suspect it'll be OK. I'll try to check with the Dr at the hospital (where I got them) if I can't reach a GP today.

Thanks again.
