Night Feeders Part 5. Calling all women who find themselves feeding when they'd rather be sleeping!!

Writerwannabe83 · 01/10/2014 21:07

This is a thread for anyone who wants support when things seem tough - especially for the women whose babies don't like sleep!!

We'll do the usual introductions:

I'm a first time mom to my 6 month old, EBF son. It's been a rocky few months, lots of ups and downs but we've finally reached a point where he's asleep by 7.30pm and only waking once during the night.

He very rarely naps in the day - and when he does it's only when he's in the car or his pushchair. It's very frustrating!!

And the last little thing about us is that we have just started the weaning journey - it's fun but messy!!

Up again feeding - second wake up of the night and 3.5 hours since he last woke. I always feed him overnight when he wakes though as I just can't be doing with the faff of trying to soothe him back to sleep in other ways - I want my sleep too much Smile

Sammy - I'm fine. I just have a history of an irregular heart rhythms, palpitations and extremely high heart rates so have had to had previous procedure to study my conduction patterns and take beta blockers. It was relatively stable until I got pregnant and then things went a bit wobbly again. I was signed off sick at 20 weeks gestation for the remainder of my pregnancy. Things are much better now and if my 24 hour recording is ok then I can come off the medication and be discharged Smile

Hope you will get discharged then writer!

2nd feed Here too after just over 4 hours

nyldn · 11/10/2014 14:26

thought we were going to have a terrible night, following a fussy day, but DS slept through from 11:30-5:45, then from 6:15-9!Shock

aside from my sore boobs, it was fantastic Grin

Redling · 11/10/2014 15:50

My clockwork baby was feeding every two hours practically on the dot again. 5,7,9am. And a poo with each one which was nice! Though DH said he was up every hour with him before 4 so I got off lightly! Big Cot tonight, very excited/apprehensive! What's he going to do?! He's crying downstairs with DH but I'm up here 'sleeping' for an hour, which I really should do. Going to absolutely blitz the top floor cleaning after, bizarrely excited to do that.

squizita · 11/10/2014 15:56

Ours does feed + poo together too. At least it kills 2 birds with 1 stone. We have 2-3 hr windows of no poo or boob which can be useful .
Not so good if she poops in her car seat on the dual carriageway and yells for milk so I have a let down leak everywhere when driving! Way home thankfully not way out!

Redling · 11/10/2014 15:57

Eew eew eew I just got into bed and my leg touched something wet, a wet wipe WITH A BIT OF POO ON IT. OMG we are turning into animals. That's it I have to do the cleaning now. I found an unwrapped nappy on the bathroom floor that DH had just left there after bath time. although I'm pretty sure the poop wipe must have been my sleepy 5am change

squizita · 11/10/2014 16:21

Lol she was saving it up. Fed her a little snack ... another poo! And the old "wee everywhere while the nappy is off" trick to boot! Good thing I'd just bought a value pack of wipes!!!!

squizita · 11/10/2014 16:24

Redling I just asked DH what on the laundry basket had poo or wee on it. He said dolefully "everything since I threw the muslin I used to mop up the changing flood on top..." Blush I think I may have some in my hair. I'm almost 100% sure there's some milk spit on me too...

squizita · 11/10/2014 17:14

Ok am I being worried or silly?
DD has done 3 full size poos and 2 wees since 3 pm. Same texture and colour as usual. Will she get dehydrated? Has she had the runs for ages? Shock

On the other hand no poo 10am-3.

What does baby diorreah look like anyway??

Sammyviv · 11/10/2014 19:07

I had exactly this too honey I went to the docs to be told not to worry
I feel your worry maybe some of the more experienced mums can advise

Sammyviv · 11/10/2014 19:12

So my day wasn't bad but DS wasn't doing his usual sleep time and I wanted to go see family and friends 40 min drive away, long story short, went saw a friend but felt a bit stressed with DS got pooped and wee'd on now home and DP had a rubbish day so he's playing x box, but I can't put DS down without him crying, so I can't even get a glass of wine or dinner! It annoys me that DP doesn't even think! Or notice I'm upset Sad

squizita · 11/10/2014 19:40

Sammy sounds like you had the same wee/poo problems today and generally. Put it this way ... what i wore today is currently in the washing machine with oxy etc!! Grin Mine hasn't done any poo for 2 hours and is fast asleep ... I do hope this doesn't mean she will cluster poo! Cluster feeds are cool but cluster nappies... Confused

Writerwannabe83 · 11/10/2014 19:45

Doing bedtime feed here about 45 minutes late because of stupid DH - but I sharn't go into it Smile I really do think they're fecking clueless sometimes!!!

Arron has had 2.5 hours worth of naps today but only because we've been out and about in the car.

We've had a very unpleasant nappy due to him eating a huge pot of pear yogurt yesterday, two rice cakes and two carrot sticks. What came out the other end was not nice Grin He's been eating curly fries this evening so that nappy should be interesting...

Sammy - I hope you are ok x x

A fretty day. Tired mama tired baby. Just eating something quickly with her in the sling after toddler has gone to sleep haven't managed to put her down all day.

Hope the night won't be too fretty as well....

Day 11. Paternity leave ends soon ... :(

squizita · 11/10/2014 20:08

Writer I'm feeding mine ... but she fell asleep half way through the 1st boob. Grr. Because I know she will wake and feed/poo in the middle of the night! Oh well . Not to mention the basketball breasts.

Wee I was fretting before the end of DHS paternity. I ended up Co sleeping again before - but now she's back to normal.

Now she's too flipping calm. Don't want to feed until 3 am!

curlyLJ · 11/10/2014 20:15

Also doing bedtime feed later than usual here. No particular reason, just been a busy day and we got home too tired to cook so got a curry and I wanted to eat before I got stuck feeding!!

Had a couple of unsettled nights here, resorted to Ibuprofen on the early hours of this morning as she was just waking constantly. Eventually she slept 2.30-7 so ok in the end. Hoping for a better night tonight. Bloody teeth!

Had a gorgeously relaxing facial and massage yesterday. Was SO nice to have an hour and a half to myself with the phone switched onto silent so I couldn't be disturbed Smile I am planning one a month now...

Cariad007 · 11/10/2014 20:18

Just an average day here but I'm really starting to dread nights as DS's sleep is getting so bad. I think he may have trouble transitioning between sleep cycles as he wakes after about an hour and is v distressed. Then he just wants to comfort suck and it's starting to get really sore.

I do wonder if introducing cow's milk has caused these sleeping problems but I'm not sure how it could? Anyway, I'd pumped some EBM last night so used that on his porridge this morning instead. He ate almost a whole Ellas's Kitchen pouch for lunch but wouldn't take much dinner, though he had a milk feed.

squizita · 11/10/2014 20:55

Curly sounds good! Need some beauty treatment myself. Hope your dd has a more comfortable time tonight.

Cariad I think my dd has inherited that trait from me! I wake in transitions or suddenly jerk physically. She does it too!

Just gave dd a boob (she woke up for half hour) and has dropped off again. Maybe she will just feed and sleep haha haha no chance!!! DH is going to do a pre sleep nappy change and pop her in a group bag. FX she'll be happy with the other boob then settle.

Redling · 11/10/2014 21:23

I hope everyone has a good night! squizita when my DS had a bit of diarrhoea it was pure liquid and squirted off the changing unit :) I'm of the feeling that if consistency and colour remains the same it's fine. DH did 4 poo's today! Also I don't count wee's, or poos, after the underweight feeding up days the midwife said there was no point counting these things precisely. I mean how long could you keep it up?! I joked to my DH he should keep up the spreadsheet of his poos (yes he made one!) until he was 21 and then present it to him :)

Well DS is asleep on my shoulder after fighting it for about an hour. WE BUILT THE COT. He looks so small in it :( I wish there were a medium size between crib and cot! DH was all for putting him in it and going downstairs but I can't do it yet. He's 2 months on Friday so I might use that as the day to put him to bed alone. That gives him a few days to get used to the cot.

Do people find that weekends throw off routine a bit? I really don't want to be a very rigid person for routine, I want him to go to bed at the same time and do bath, bottle bed etc but nap wise I have a friend who put her daughter in her cot in the dark at set nap times during the day, but now at the age of 18 months she will not sleep anywhere but there or she gets really upset. so they have to be at home around 1pm every single day. Now she's older days out are difficult and parties etc. I really don't want that, we want him to come everywhere with us at weekends so I need a baby who can sleep on the move! What are the benefits of cot naps in the day? He still just sleeps all the time at the moment so this isn't a concern yet!

I really hope he can go more than 2 hours between feeds tonight. I can put up with it because he's so little, but I would have likes to see some sign of progression at this point. I just don't know why he's so regular!

mrsmugoo · 11/10/2014 21:33

Redling - when babies get older they just aren't as portable, they won't just sleep anywhere. Mine is 7 months now and usually naps for about an hour and a quarter, twice a day.

If we're out and about, he will sleep in a moving pushchair or car but only for about 20-30 minutes, and not that deeply and then he'll be really cranky at bedtime. So it's pretty much a disaster if he doesn't get at least one cot sleep in the day.

The room has to be dark and quiet or he just won't settle.

Writerwannabe83 · 11/10/2014 21:36

Arron is still awake!!

I have a serious case of a pissed off and over tired baby!! It does my head in that we are in this situation because of my DH and I'm the one having to deal with it whilst he watches TV downstairs.

Two hours I've been up here now trying to get Arron to sleep - I'm slowly being driven mad!

Also we've started the Gro Bags and I hate them. When I pick him up at night to feed him they bunch up around his neck and I'm always trying to straighten them and pull it down so I really have to move him too much and it wakes him up. They look very chokey to me! But I suppose they must be safe :) I really want a cot bumper on the cot too as I hate him hitting himself on the bars but apparently they are dangerous so I'm not sure. I'm trying to be a laid back mummy and in truth I tend to be of the opinion that when it comes to DS I assume the best rather then the worst (DS sneezes a few times, DH thinks he has a cold, I point out DH should Hoover more as it's probably dust!) but now someone has said cot bumpers are dangerous I feel I shouldn't use them (although they are sold every bloody where).

Am I being mad or are cot bumpers and blankets really baby death traps?! I get that it will be a pain keeping a blanket on him so will stick it out with the bags. He has so many lovely blankets too! They'll do for the buggy though :)

Cannotbelieveit · 11/10/2014 22:11

Ryder has been asleep since 7.40, briefly woke and cried but put himself back to sleep.

Cot bumpers aren't a great idea as if the baby is mobile the theory is that they can roll over and their face be up the bumper and it's not breathable. I use safe dreams cot wrap, I feel safer using those tbh!
