Time between feeds

I have a 3 month old DS who I am formula feeding. He needs 5 feeds a day of 180ml but how often should I space these apart. I was doing 4 hours but I think he gets hungry before this so could I do every 3 hours and get him to bed a bit earlier?

I didn't have a routine of times of feeds at this age, I feed 'on demand' this meant my daughter dictated when she had milk and i knew she was never hungry. It is more time consuming in the beginning don't get me wrong, but it meant she developed her own 'meal times' and by around four months by writing the times she wanted milk down I could see a pattern emerging. To the point where she would 'ask' for milk at the same times each day all by herself.

I'm so glad I did this as she was a hungry child and had a lot more milk than her peers who seemed to have no appetite at all(so comparing to them or other babies would have been useless)

I would say this could work for you as you say he seems hungry at times which are his cues to say he wants more milk I think!

Hope that makes sense!

I demand fed ds1 with formula, and the feeeds were roughly 3 hours, I think.

From memory, he settled into 7am, 10.30am, 12 noon, 3.30pm, 7pm and 10pm. Sometimes he "split" the 7pm, so had half a bottle at 5.30pm, then a nap, and half a bottle at 7pm.

He was a very hungry baby, mind you - 91st centile all the way through.

Exactly the same! Those were roughly my times as well.

She is also a big baby with a very healthy appetite so I stopped asking the advice of moms with smaller babies and we went our own way.

I did 3hourly between 7am and 7pm: 7,10,1,4,7 then bed.

I then woke dd or lifted her asleep at 11pm and fed her. She (for a little while) would then wake me at 3 for another feed and then 7am. She dropped the 3am at abput three.months.
