Sound like colic, reflux or wind?

My BF 1 week old has some funny nights - especially last night (NO sleep. Had to Co sleep which I'm not meant to do as have reduced sleep paralysis).
Usually she is happy in a moses basket, cluster feeds evening, sleeps waking 2-3 times between 12-6.
Bad nights (last night for one) she can't seem to lie flat in comfort. She seems very hungry (I feed on demand) but then hiccups and fusses and cries if nor held or laid on the side facing me or DH. But she cannot lie down to sleep! This means zero sleep for us.
Does this suggest a digestive issue or just a grumpy night? It doesn't seem to be every night.
Also her umbilical cord came off today - would that have been irritating her?

She will sleep happy as anything after daytime booby, on a slightly sloping foam chair thing DH gave me. Unfortunately not recommended for night use but at least she's not seriously unwell.
Might go to a session as I wonder if one side she isn't latching as well and hence sometimes has wind sometimes not?

Watching with interest as my 2 week old DS does the same!

I don't know if this is ok, but maybe you can roll up a muslin and put it under the head end of her mattress so she can sleep on a bit of a slope?

Good idea! Rang national BFIng helpline who said it sounded like just the usual gripes not anything serious. So propping up might help.

My nearly 6 week old hates lying flat in the crib or Moses basket at times. He had nights when he's been fine and nights where he hates it. Looking into it and seeing all the baby sleep aids that prop them up on various positions I think most babies do! Also a week old baby is probably not going to do the same thing night after night, I've found my son incredibly sporadic. Some nights he grunts and moans in his sleep all night but he is fine! They will have some discomfort from wind normally, it's not always reflux or colic. Also DS has been through a 'leap' week of development where he suddenly wanted to sleep on us and wouldn't go down awake, or be put down on the bed or sofa! Lots of cuddles and minimal jobs done last week! I think it's incredibly normal for then to not want to sleep alone once they 'wake up' to the world and realise where they are. I've had a couple of accidental naps with DS on me while settling him enough to put him down. Also he cries and wakes up when he farts which is a lot :) nothing sinister, he just hates being windy as most babies do.

Wait until she grunts all night! It's impossible to sleep as I always think he's about to wake!

How is it tonight squizita? An example of unpredictable sleep, tonight he has gone down in his crib after a 5am feed and opened his eyes , but gone back to sleep without crying so far just with me stroking and shushing him in the crib, while at his 3am feed he wouldn't go down without crying until DH cuddled him into a deep sleep first. No reason, no 'problem', he's just a tiny baby and so unpredictable! I didn't mention that I found that when he was 1-2 weeks he was still so curled from the womb that he would startle when flat on his back and I think it scared him a bit.

My one realisation that I want to pass on to you (in my whoooole 6 weeks of experience!) in the hope it will help is that Ive given up on thinking of everything he did as having a reason and being something that had a root cause I could 'solve'When he started grunting and making loads of noises at night and whining and making SO MUCH NOISE when he pooed and farted I thought he had some digestive issues, but someone pointed out that if he wasn't crying then he wasn't in pain, babies are simple like that! Sounds he makes that sound like he's bloody dying don't actually mean anything, he's actually asleep and perfectly fine! It's hard to get used to. But you can ignore a whole host of bizarre groans.

Also your DD is probably just starting to realise you are her mummy and daddy and wants to be held with you all the time, maddening for sleep purposes but normal and what we had for the first 5 days so had to sleep in relays. You're lucky that she seems to have slept well up until now!

My main point is please don't go crazy thinking that every change in her behaviour is a problem to be solved because judging from my son she may wildly change her behaviour every day/week. Also in the first days/weeks they are still so sleepy from the womb that when they 'wake up' they seem like a totally different child! When DS just realised there was a world around him he got far less placid and gone was sleepy chilled baby lying in his Moses basket! He's still a very good baby on the whole thank god! If you've fed and burped and changed her then she's probably fine and you just have to get on with it and cuddle your limpet baby!

Thanks ... yes she's being sporadic! Up now as it was getting light last feed/change so I can't drop off.
But ... After the several feeds and changes 8-10pm I was lying there waiting for the next grizzle and found myself drifting off as she was OK! She woke to feed 3 times but each time slept pretty quickly.
She did produce a big time nappy flood at 5 am ..
But she was chilled about it lol!

Need to sort out why I lie there awake next to him!

Our little one was exactly like this and after pushing and pushing at GP we got a referral to paed consultant. Turns our she has really bad reflux. Wuld definitely be worth getting checked out and asking for a referral if you think it would help. Our GPs can only prescribe gaviscon which caused horrendous constipation. Once they have permission from consultants they can prescribe stronger stuff if it does turn out to be reflux
