Hi all
Got a womb infection that isn't clearing up and pains are increasing . Advised to go on metronidazole so can't breast feed on it , but baby is only two weeks old and feeding barely established and one breast is so much slower and doesn't get a lot out

How on earth would I try and keep my breasts active so I can still continue to feed him once course is finished ?
I have pumped the odd feed and he takes a bottle but I'm sure this creates a lazy latch in him ?

Please advise I don't want to stop :-(

I'm just out of hospital with a uterine infection and was on that antibiotic. I continued bf throughout.

irememberwhenthiswasallfields · 04/09/2014 15:01

I've breastfed on that antibiotic too. Who told you you couldn't?

Not usually a prob to bf with that. Check out the info sheets on drugs and bf at the breastfeeding network website and share with doctor.

Ah really ? Doctor says it makes it taste really bitter ? Would be great if I didn't have to stop it's far too soon and not sure I'll keep up with the pumping enough

Oh yes she said it causes thrush and diarrohea in babies

DD2 did not seem bothered. I was on 3 different antibiotics, 3 different painkillers, iron tablets and blood thinning injections - I was able to bf on this cocktail! Grin

DD2 did have very loose stools (as did I) and was diagnosed with oral thrush last night so that may be accurate.

I've just finished a course of those and I didn't stop either, that was my third lot of antibiotics too . Doc knew I was ebf when she prescribed them. It didn't stop my baby from feeding but her nappies have smelled awful. If you were to ff at this stage I don't think you would go back to breast tbh.

Yup, fed on that as well (and several other antibiotics), there's no reason to stop feeding because of it. Gave the baby horrendous nappies but no other notable ill effects. Pretty much all antibiotics have a risk of causing thrush and diarrhoea in BF babies (and indeed the adults they're prescribed to), but that's not a reason not to use them or to make mums wean to take them.

Here's the BFN factsheet, says the whole "makes your milk taste funny" is anecdotal or at least they can't find the original source (though also anecdotally that garlic masks the taste):
