DS is 12 days old... We had a tough start with breastfeeding. He wouldn't latch for the first 3 days, and due to gestational diabetes he was started on formula top ups quite quickly. I expressed religiously and we managed to establish BF day 4/day 5 when I had another set back and needed a scan. Due to the radiation, I wasn't allowed to BF for 14 hours.
Because of all this, he prefers the bottle. BF is too much effort and he gets frustrated with trying to latch. We can spend 45 mins trying to latch and when he does, he is so vigorous it's painful for the first few minutes. My nipples are sore and it's making it hard for both of us.
Tonight we've used a nipple shield.. He latched straight away and I am far more comfortable. To me this seems like the perfect solution?! But what are the downsides? Is this just an easy option and should I be persevering with trying to get him to latch properly? We've managed to reduce his top ups from every feed down to once, maybe twice during the night and this is normally after a long battle with a hungry baby who is frustrated.
I want to breastfeed. I am still expressing and hoping I can replace the formula with breastmilk. I just have no idea if I'm doing the right thing now!
