Hi,
Can I take normal multivitamins when breastfeeding or does it need to be vitamins tailored for breastfeeding? I havnt got the best diet so not taking them is not an option right now.
Thanks

Best to take pg vitamins as the level of Vit A in a normal multivitamin can be too high. Can you ask your pharmacist for the NHS Healthy Start Vitamins for pregnancy. £1.37 per pack.

Thanks for your replies.

Do you have to be on a benefit for those healthy start vitamins?

You can have as much Vitamin A as you want when breastfeeding, assuming that you are not also pregnant, so you can take whatever happens to be cheapest!

When pregnant and/or breastfeeding, the DoH recommends that women take Vitamin D supplements.

I don't think you have to be on benefit to get the vitamins. My mw gave me three pots of them before she discharged me and we don't get anything except child benefit. I think they were to tide me over the new born phase- after then my diet got much better as I could actually eat a meal!

Nope. The NHS vitamins are free to those on benefits but £1.37 for everyone else.

I think whether or not you pay depends on your area. I hope DinoSnores is right -I've been taking the multi vitamins that I bought by mistake when I was pregnant. I was just using vitamin d, but I began to feel very anaemic, so wanted some iron.
