Are MAM bottles really effective for stubborn bottle refuser?

Am at wits end.... Heard lots about this but just wondering what other peoples experience is. Desperate to stop BF after 6 months and going back to work soon. DD just not having any of it.

I haven't tried MAM (possibly the only teat I haven't tried). Out of all the others, I had the best success with NUK latex but it's still a struggle and I'm now deciding whether to crack on with cups or persevere with a bottle (DD is 7.5 months). FWIW I am starting to think just picking a teat and persevering is the way forward as chopping and changing might not be helping. Good luck!

Both dds took MAM tears really well. Granted I only Bf dd1 for three weeks but I had trouble with getting her to take Tommy tippee bottles and she took a mam straight away.

McBaby · 24/06/2014 10:11

Never worked for my DD1 I tried every bottle. Still at nearly 2 she can't get milk out of a valved cup and chews on a dummy if she finds the one we tried to give DD2.

We persevered with a doidy and at about 6 months she would take a couple of oz easily with no screaming.

Playtex are also good for bottle refuser.

Mim78 · 24/06/2014 22:36

My ds won't take mam but will take dr brown's or playtex (I think anything but mam tbh although I've heard they are good for others).

mam teats worked for my 3

TitsCrossed · 24/06/2014 22:42

I've tried many many bottles, not mam though. Dd 5mo is happiest with formula from a tommee tippee basic free flow cup. Whenever she does take from a bottle (grudgingly, only about 3-4oz) she seems to get colic/wind afterwards. Never happens after using a cup. It can be a bit messy but she's being better and can glug-glug milk from it.

I'm back to work in a week and a half Sad

Never had this fuss with ds. He couldn't give a shit where his milk came from!

Littlegiraffe · 24/06/2014 22:43

I honestly think it just depends on the baby. Mam was the only teat my bottle refuser eventually took to. And I tried a lot!!

MissWimpyDimple · 24/06/2014 22:45

Only one my refuser took too as well. There is a firmness about them which meant I could sort of shove it in!

LJBanana · 24/06/2014 22:46

I'm watching with interest. My dc2 was a bottle refuser, I finally got him to take a NUK, the process nearly broke me. My DC3 is now going the same way.

Jellybelly18 · 24/06/2014 22:57

Nuk only for me too. Would only take the bare minimum but wouldn't take any from other brands. I also found that giving the bottle quite warm helped too. Almost where you might think it was too warm.

LJBanana · 24/06/2014 22:57

My mistake it wasn't a nuk,that was DC1 but he wasn't a refuser.
Dc2 finally took a Nuby, and he was a massive, every bottle on the high street refuser.
DC 3 has currently refused, Nuk and Nuby, tommee tippee and today's avent.

I will be hunting down mam tomorrow!!

LJBanana · 25/06/2014 22:20

I tried a MAM today. It was refused.

Poppety · 26/06/2014 21:35

My first baby took to mam and had refused tommee tippee, this was at 6 weeks old
My second baby is currently 14 weeks old and has do far refused mam, tommee tippee, Haberman, NUK and medela!!

leedy · 26/06/2014 23:04

Have you tried a cup? DS1 hated bottles but got the hang of a Doidy cup straight away and then a soft spout sippy cup.

Penvelope · 27/06/2014 00:09

My first was a bottle refuser. I spent a small fortune on different types of bottles, it made no difference. All I needed to do is take a bottle out of the cupboard and she started to scream Hmm

RobbStarksBitch · 27/06/2014 08:52

My Ds2 is 8 weeks old was fine with mam for expressed milk until the last week! Now he's refusing a bottle all together and will only breastfeed!

LJBanana · 28/06/2014 10:48

The second a bottle gets placed in my DS's moth he is screaming. He looks like he doesn't know what to do at all, which I understand as it's all new, but even swallowing the bit of milk that jut dribbles into his mouth he has difficulties with.
At his jabs this week, when the nurse gave the oral dose she said he was the most difficult baby she'd given it too, for not swallowing it and creating. She wasn't being rude at all she just commented.
What can I do?
He's my 3rd and I've breast fed all 3. Ds2 was a bottle refuser but we finally cracked it about 16 weeks as he was so hungry and has tongue tie so I decided to switch. DS 1 was breast fed for 9 months but took a bottle straight away so I could express if I wanted too.

I've tried all the tricks in the book.
