How long is too long

To go without pooing?
My ds is 14 weeks and ebf and has gone for a week withou doing a poo. I know that this is quite normal for a breastfed baby but am just wondering at what point it's no longer normal and becomes a problem?
He seems quite content although is doing a lot of very smelly wind and squirming around a lot

At a week I'd pop and see my GP. It helps my baby if I massage his tummy in a clockwise direction. Often end up with a poo shortly after.

A drop of cooled, boiled water may help move things along.

Thanks for the advice.

We had an epic poonami at 6am so hopefully normal movements will resume.

The week long gaps have happened a couple of times now, whenever I mention it to the hv they look briefly alarmed and then tell me it's normal. I'm seeing the paediatrician in a couple of weeks so might quiz her about it as I do find it a bit disconcerting

Dd was breast fed and never went more frequently than once every 4 days by which time she would be in pain. Our health visitors at our breast feeding cafe gave me some massages to do which usually helped things along. A friend's DS only used to poo once every 10 days - he had a problem where part of his bowel didn't work so wasn't shifting things through. If probably raise it with a medical professional if I were you.

It is normal for breastfed babies over about 6 weeks old. My DD went through a period of pooing once every 10-14 days. She's now 3 and perfectly healthy.

This has helped me too as I was worried!

Elizabeth1984 · 25/06/2014 22:01

Dd only pooed once a fortnight from 6wks to 6mths. She was ebf, I was worried for the first 2 wks, but then I stopped worrying about it. Took her to health visitor and Gp, they didn't know what to say, but she was so obviously healthy they weren't worried.

So it's definitely not unheard of!

My DD pooed once every 6 or 7 days for a couple of months when she was little and she never seemed uncomfortable. Problem was when it came she usually needed a bath which wasn't always convenient... Funny, that made me feel all nostalgic. Weird!

Thanks all, very reassuring.
I'm going to see the consultant in a week anyway so will mention it to her anyway.
