How much formula should my baby drink?

My 6 wk old ds was born just under 3 weeks early at 5lb11, and now weighs about 8lb7.

We've been increasing the amount of formula we're making up as and when he begins to consistently drain bottles, and he's now consistently draining 5oz bottles so we're looking to up them to offer him 6oz. The nhs guideline says he should be taking around 25oz a day and he's already way over this amount without increasing I it even more!

What should I do? Am I doing the right thing offering more?

Yes, just keep offering what he will take. My boy drank, to my mind a crazy amount, but doctor and everyone said ok,babies regulate themselves. So Just relax is my advice.

Ask your hv. Do you feed 4 hourly or on demand? Is he keeping it all down? What's the weight gain like.

I'd imagine that if you up to 6oz that he'll drop a bottle and space them out. Fingers crossed its the 3am one!!

Just feed what he wants.

thank you for your replies!

farmyard I'm feeding on demand but its pretty much every 4 hours. he was weighed tuesday and had put on half a lb in a week. Here's hoping it's the demise of the 3am feed!

Is he still hungry after he drains a bottle? Over feeding can be an issue with bottles so it is sensible to be cautious.

he's built up to draining, iyswim? He's been gradually taking more and more & now he's taking the whole lot. Think I'll call the hv tomorrow!
