My neighbour just came home with her dd who was born 12 wks premature. she is expressing exclusively and baby is home 18 days before due date.

thing is, her baby hasn't latched on yet. she would like her to latch but i find it a bit strange that she has been released without the hospital making sure baby can latch.

Has she told hospital she is going to express and bottle feed though?

she is expressing and bottlefeeding but all our previous conversations has been that she wants to make (or try to make) her baby breastfeed.

The I am surprised as well. In our unit, mums and babies room in together to get breastfeeding started. Do you know if she has tried cuddling baby skin-to-skin? Baby may attempt to latch on.

I am not surprised, the level of postnatal care in some hospitals is terrible. I was so disappointed in mine, midwives were not supportive at all. Just thoughts of it make me feel depresed again. Community mw and local breastfeeding support group are the reason i started to bf.
Did your neighbour have a visit from community mw?

Just want to congratulate your neighbour on managing to express exclusively for 10weeks.

I came out of hospital (well ran would be a better description as their bf advice was so bad ) with a baby who wouldnt latch properly. In fact the first feeds we attempted at home he screamed blue murder he had become so scared of my breasts from the rough handling of the mws . I expressed using a hand pump and bottle fed him my milk for 4-5 weeks before eventually getting him feeding from me (although I had to use nipple sheilds for 3 months he was so nipple confused). I wouldnt have got very far without the excellent support from my local LLL group. Well done to your friend for perseverring - hope she can get the help she needs - is there an LLL group nearby?

Ditto about being released before DS latched ? at 3 days after an emergency c-section! Couldn?t have done it without hubby and mother?s support. Her family must be so supportive. I?ve got no advice, but just want to express my heartfelt admiration for this woman. Tell her to keep trying and don?t give up!

i gave her the contact details for a trainee bf counsellor in our area. she promised to contact her. i will probably see her tomorrow to ask how she got on.
