Breast pump sterilisation

Hi,
This may seem like a really silly question but how do people pump when out?

For example,
If I was out from 9am til 5pm I would pump before I went out and when I got home. I then take the manual pump with me and pump once. If I wanted/needed to pump a second time how is this done as the pump would not be sterile?

I'm just wondering if there is some sort of on the go solution to sterilise. I've looked around in boots and couldn't find such a thing.

Thanks

When I was pumping several times a day at work, I just washed the pump.

Breast milk isn't the same sort of breeding ground for nasties that formula is, and the pump was getting sterilised once a day.

But DD was 8 months by then. I might have felt differently if she was newborn.

I had a very premature baby in NICU for two months and was pumping multiple times a day, so I'm a bit anal of a specialist when it comes to keeping pump sets very, very clean :)

NICU recommendations were to sterilise once a day, and just wash each part of the pump set with hot water and washing up liquid ASAP after each pumping session. Ideally, you'd let it all air-dry, but if that's not possible it's ok to dry it with some clean kitchen roll or suchlike. Jiffy bags are your best friends for keeping everything clean during transport. The main thing is to make sure your hands and anything the pump sets come into contact with are clean.

Hope that helps!

That's great thankyou I've been sterilising after every use but is there anything you can buy to clean it after use when there is no sinks about? For example wipes?

When I pumped at work I'd just keep all pump bits in fridge in between sessions - I didn't wash out. This was recommended on a US site and logic being if bm keeps in fridge then the milk remnants in pump won't go icky in between pumping sessions. Never had any probs, but DD was 8 mo by this time. I'd have been more cautious with a younger baby.

I think Milton do wipes

Milton and Medela do wipes. Although what I'd do is bring two bottles, pump into one and cap it off, wipe pump and for second expressing use clean bottle. Remember freezer packs for keeping pump milk cold.
