sore nipples at 4 months

just wondering whether anyone else is or has experienced this? My nipples got over the shock of feeding in the first few weeks but I'm finding it quite painful again now :( is that normal? Will it always hurt or will they toughen up again? Tia...

It's usually a latch issue this far in unless you have thrush. Have you checked your baby's mouth?

Nipple thrush as I remember it felt like my Nipple was burning during nursing and they looked pale pink and soggy.

Hmm, I really hadn't considered latch problems. Can't see anything in baby's mouth or on my nipple to suggest thrush.
It's been hurting for maybe a week, 8-9 days now, hoped it would just go away!

When your baby nurses next check that you're tummy to tummy and nose and chin are touching the beast at the same time and loads of nipper is in the mouth.

Don't forget to break the suction at the end rather than just letting your baby pull off and at the end of a feed, rub a little milk in and let them air dry.

If it doesn't resolve then ask somebody to check your latch and for any other issues that might have cropped up.

thank you. she sits on my lap tummy poiting at the ceiling at turns her head toward me. she has always fed in this position and when I try to move her she gets annoyed. Anything I can do to encourage her? or just keep trying?

gamerchick, thank you. I have got into a different position and it is mu h better. I honestly didn't think we could have a latch problem this far on. Thanks again for taking the time to reply. I was having awful thoughts of giving up.

I also go though stages of discomfort- OK for a couple of weeks then not so good for a week.
It usually seems to resolve itself by going back to using Lansinoh and checking the latch.
Like you, when its bad I think about stopping but I'm hanging in there at 3 months with lots of advice from mumsnet!!

I'm really glad to hear it.. I must admit i've just winced at your feeding position description no wonder you're sore.

If she protests at nursing.. lying down on the bed is a good way of doing it, just make sure she has her own blanket rather than sharing just in case you both fall asleep.
