Do you limit caffeine if BF?

How much do you think it is okay to have?

My caffeine intake has been creeping up and I'm just wondering if I should be cutting back.

No, I don't limit it. I probably have 3 cups of instant coffee or tea and 1-2 diet cokes in a day. If it seemed to affect my baby I would cut back but it hasn't so far.

TheScience · 20/05/2014 11:45

Though I don't drink caffeine after 5 or I can't sleep Grin

KikiShack · 20/05/2014 12:03

I limit, but obsessively, but after 9 months of limiting I feel a bit weird when I've had eg 3 cups of normal tea. I basically have decaf when I'm home or if it's easily available when I'm out, but don't worry about it if they're no option somewhere. I wouldn't have 4 full strength filter coffees in an afternoon, I use common sense, but no need to be ott imo.

PurplePidjin · 20/05/2014 12:12

I did, but that was because it was causing ds's colic no coffee or chocolate for 15 months WAAAAAAAAAH BUT that's really rare, afaik there's no reason to limit caffeine unless it's affecting your sleep :)

www.kellymom.com is a really good website for breastfeeding information, worth checking out if there's something there on the subject

LostMyPants · 20/05/2014 13:17

Thank you.

Kellymom did have research but i just wondered what people actually do!

I'm having 4 cups of instant coffee some days. DD is 9mo though and seems unaffected.

I've been pregnant or breastfeeding for nearly 4 years so 4 coffees seems a lot!

Drinking my usual instant coffe doesn't affect my 3.5 month old dd but I have 2 avoid the strong coffee u get @ cafés as it makes her unsettled. I try 2 keep to the same food/drink I had throughout my pregnancy.

PeanutPatty · 20/05/2014 13:26

I switched to decaf.

MildDrPepperAddiction · 20/05/2014 13:30

I did with first two DCs and will again with this on when born.

Nope, had no effect on either of mine.

PurplePidjin · 20/05/2014 13:49

I only ditched it to that extent because he had 3 hour screaming fits the evening after I had anything with caffeine in! It's pretty rare to get that reaction, like any reaction to a food in bm - I've only come across one other mum with the same experience and that was on here - so I doubt I'd go caffeine free with a non-reactive baby iyswim.

NickyEds · 20/05/2014 15:04

I cut it out when I was pregnant and now it makes me feel dizzy and sickConfused so still avoid it.

deepinthewoods · 20/05/2014 15:15

No I loved coke and Irn Bru while I was breasttfeeding. Didn't upset my babies at all.

Jellybellymummyofsix · 20/05/2014 17:09

I don't drink fizzy drinks. I rarely drink coffee only tea. I've only had one cup of tea today.

It's not something I really thought about to be honest. I would imagine a few cups a day would be fine but lime everything in life, drink caffine in moderation.
