Mystery on baby's bottom

I don't know where to post this but I know this area gets lots of traffic from knowledgeable mums so hopefully someone can help me.
DD has something strange on/in her bum. It's white and it wipes away. It looks like sudocream residue, like it was put on a couple of hours ago but just a little remains in the bumhole creases. But we haven't used sudo for ages.
Does this sound familiar to anyone? DD seems fine, though she might be teething and isn't enjoying the hot weather so is a bit grumbly, but nothing extreme.
DD is 7 months, ebf until about 6 weeks ago and is being very slowly weaned, eating fruit and cheese/yoghurt but not much else in case that helps diagnose?
I have a doc appt for myself on Thurs so if necessary I can switch that to DD and get her seen...

Oh and we use cloth nappies during the day, sposies at night if that is relevant, probably change them every 3-4 hours, they're normally quite wet!

thrush ?

Madratlady · 19/05/2014 08:40

Does she have a sore bottom? My first thought was thrush.

KikiShack · 19/05/2014 08:54

My first thought was thrush too, but when I looked it up online the symptoms didn't seem to match- the internet said small red pinpricks which form a red sore mass over time, then white scaly patches. Neither the red rash nor the scaly are at all like what this is. Are there lots of different manifestations of thrush?

Yes thrush- or any fungal infection can have different manifestations. Three are many different strains of fungal organism with could give the symptoms you describe, but he white residue is very telling. Speak to your HV or buy some Daktarin cream for the pharmacy.

Great, thanks deep, I'll speak to the HV tmrw, good excuse to get DD weighed. I really hope it's not too sore for her in the meantime.
I've moved to sposie today as they do keep her drier, could I put a bit of yoghurt on too to help relieve any itching? Any home remedy advice much appreciated Grin until I get to the medics tmrw.

I wouldn't use yogurt, it could make things worse. Fungal organisms will thrive on the sugars in the yogurt. ( Don't put breastmilk on it for the same reason)
For short term relief dab with a solution of Bicarbonate of Soda ( 1 teaspoon disollved in a cup of cooled boiled water), it will relieve discomfort.
