Expressing - how much should I expect?

Got a shiny new breastpump yesterday and managed an oz off one boob and nothing from the other.

Today got half from the one that wasn't obliging yesterday, and another half oz from the same one later on.

It's only early days - dd is 6 days old, and obviously I only got the pump yesterday, so does this sound reasonable?

yes, it builds up as you get more experienced and work out when the best times are for you to do it.

I found expressing while I was feeding worked well, if you can manage to hold the pump and feed simulataneously - takes a bit of practice. First thing in the morning also seems to work for me.
It does definitely increase with time, so keep perservering.

Sorry- meant to say express from one side while feeding from the other. Bit tricky otherwise! Obviously only works if the baby doesn't usually take from bothe sides at one feed.

Oh yes, it sounds great for early days, babies only take about 3 oz in the very beginning anyway. I built up to (dare I say) 4 x 9oz bottles a day!!!!!

can I ask why you are expressing ? Definitely in the early days no more than an ounce or two at most. thnk how big a babies stomach is - they don't need much at that stage so you don't make much.

My dd is 8 weeks and i could only get 1-2 oz at a time - i now express whilst feeding on the other side and it's much easier as you get a pretty much instant let down.

throckenholt · 01/09/2006 21:16

it is the same with double pumping - you get much better let down and quicker if you do both at the same time - I guess your body thinks you are feeding twins so makes more of an effort

I was eventually expressing 24oz per day by the time dd1 was 12 weeks old ( I was storing for going back to work!!) I used to get up and do 10 oz off one breast before I fed her in the morning, and as by the time she was 3 months she was sleeping about 8 and not feeding again until around 2, I used to get another 8oz at my bedtime, plus the rest throught he day - whenever I was feeding, from breast shells etc.
Sounds like you are doing very well for so early on. I never pumped that early. And didnt much with ds or dd2 as I wasnt working outside the home, but used to do a couple of bottles a week so dh could do some niht feeds!
