Bit of background...19 week old DD has been back and forth to the doctor with reflux. Started on Gaviscon a few weeks ago, reduced the vomiting very slightly but made her very constipated, she was going days then squeezing out an adult poop. I reduced her Gaviscon bottles to nighttime only and we tried Ranitidine which made her projectile vomit so back to the doctor again. We were given Omeprazole 4.2ml daily and told to continue using the Gaviscon.
I have some questions I probably should ask the doctor but since I had to explain to him how to get 4.2ml from a 10mg soluble tablet I have no faith in him whatsoever
Is there no alternative to the Gaviscon for the actual throwing up part of reflux? I thought the Omeprazole would help or does it just stop the acid in the vomit, therefore the pain?
Does the dose sound right to you? She's just over 6kg. I ask because she sometimes still arches and screams while feeding.
How accurate does the dose need to be? The pharmacist said it didn't need to be so specific as 4.2ml, 4 or 5ml would've been fine. The doctor said I couldn't put it in her bottle as I needed to make sure she took the correct amount. It would be much easier if I didn't have to syringe her with foul tasting & gritty medicine (I mean does the stuff ever actually dissolve properly?)
Are there other medicines she could try or is the Omeprazole/Gaviscon combo the end of the road? She's still vomiting, still constipated and I suspect still in some pain.
Finally, I was seriously considering weaning her slightly early as I've read on here that starting solids can really help with reflux. Anyone any experience in these circumstances?
