I'm sure my Dd has one or teh other but am unsure as to what symptoms point to what condition.
symptoms
arching legs/back after a feed
coughing up after a feed - sometimes an hour later
very wet hiccups & buring
wind not coming up
screaming/grunting after a feed

sounding like she's going to throw up after a feed ( as opposed to couhging up)
all of this happnes aminly during & after teh night feeds & ;asts for on average 45 minutes.
am going to teh HV this afternoon & would like to go armed with some information rather than appearing like a clueless neurotic so & so.
thanks

Sounds more like to colic to me than reflux. My dd had chronic reflux from birth to 8 months, to the point where she was in hospital most weeks and under the hospital for the first year. One episode was so violent, that she was continuoulsy sick for three hours and eventually turned blue!

Colic tends to be severe trapped wind and if your child isn't bringing up her wind, this could be a problem. There are things you can try, Infacol being a fave reccomendation among midwives and HVs. I tried this but to no avail, so bought the Boots own colic stuff. Cheaper and worked better but only for a short time.

We later discovered that dd was reacting to baby foods and formulas. She didn't have har stuff very often as I home made everything for her. She went on to cows milk too and after a month of reflux once the change had been made, she was over it and now is only sick when she has a poorly tummy, rather than everytime she eats or drinks.

Hope this helps!

Sorry, meant to add that the symptoms of reflux tend to be:

difficulty in bringing up wind

vomiting after eating or drinking

grumpiness caused by food/drink swishing up and down from the throat to the stomach ( abit like heartburn)

plus all the symptoms mentioned previously.

Well, that was certainly the case for my dd but as with every aspect of child development, all children are different!

Hi - DS had reflux and had all the symptoms you describe. I'm not sure as he's my only one (for the next 5 or so weeks anyway!) but I think there's less sick with colic. BUT it's difficult to tell the difference and you're going to need to rely on your HV a bit I'm afraid. Things we found with DS that didn't work were all the things aimed at colic - infacol, gripe water etc. Things that did work were aimed at reflux - enfamil formula, gaviscon etc. There is a test they can do for reflux so if you andyour HV aren't sure get a referral to a paediatrician asap so you can know for sure. More info here . You can also have silent reflux where the baby has all the symptoms except the sickness so just being sick isn't a way of telling the difference.

Good luck with your appointment.
