hi just been looking at messages posted already re breastfeeding need some info myselt if anyone can help, i have a (12 yr) old and a (10wk) old the first bottle fed, and c section the second normal del and fully breast fed till 7 wks then given her formula bottle at night but breast throughout day till she goes to bed, already viewd the charts for breast on kellymom as sick of looking a pink bottle fed charts in book given by HV have asked for appropriate but not any about as yet. husband like me took a bit on convincing on breast as didnt seem like she was gaining, she was 10 days over had sever jaundice and ended up in SCBU for 3 days and 1 1/2 days light therapy by bed, she is on folic acid and iron for blood etc, she lost weight birth was 71b and she is now just over 91b at 10wks not including week in hossie she is averaging 4oz a week is this NORMAL as she is only on 10th centile line at moment on breast chart but is slowly rising my HV is not to bad and tells me a long as she is happy,(she wasnt today "lol") and feeding okay not to bother not like some other HV i could mention at my surgery, am i worrying unecessarly as other HV want to review her in two weeks, ive only put her on formula at night for longer sleep for me "lol" will rethink this though when i go back to work, when i express my amounts i get off are cra# is this NORMAL TOO will my littlun defoe be getting all she needs if i cannot get much off too

Take her off the formula - it's knocking your supply.

If you want to give her a bottle before bed so someone else can do it and you can sleep, try expressing for it.

But honestly, until she's gaining a bit better, drop the formula and bfeed her.

4oz a week is fine if she's happy, alert, etc - but I do think that the formula's affecting your supply.

Try expressing when she's feeding if you can get the positioning right - you'll let down on both boobs at the same time and it will be easier to express larger quantities. Expressing in itself isn't a good guide as to how much your baby's getting as your baby's far better at getting milk from you than a pump.

DontlookatmeImshy · 17/08/2006 21:56

Try not to worry about how much you are expressing. It has no reflection on how much dd is getting. I can only express about 10mls even when my boobs are almost bursting.

Apparently formula at night helping them sleep is a myth. Some people will claim it worked for them but it never did for us. It also reduces your supply. Nighttimes feeding are apparently the most important for gettign your supply going (or so I heard, someone might correct me)

I would agree with HV who says it's probably OK...
Amounts expressed are not necessarily the same as what she gets when she feeds ! Some women are crap at expressing though you can be taught how to hand express well and get loads! (I taught someone this weekw ho came to our BF clinic with a 14 weeks old and she said she could not get a drop... we got a cup full... she was gobsmacked!).
There are nore calories in breastmilk (especially at night) so you might actually benefit from BF her then!!!! Some BF babies sleep 6hours at night from birth... formula only possibly improve that by 30 to 60 mins....

hi ive looked at comments so far, regarding sleeping i can put her down about 6.30 if lucky and apart from tonite she is well away by 7.00 tonight 7.45 before settled but been a little rafink all day "lol" i/we waker her hubby on nights this week between 10.30/11.00 change feed wind and she sleeps till 5.30 on a good day so she is sleeping for 8-9 hrs not including breaks on feeding 2 response mentioned some else feed her while i get to bed earlier but if she means bottle of breast then ive problem as not expressing enough for bottle, maximum was 3oz 3 wks ago now 1oz if lucky, HV has never stated formula at night affects milk produce im soooo confused now, as in morning when i feed her my boo#s are huge and i still feed her all through day, shes due a feed soon and i know i wont have enough up top for her

Your body thinks your baby does not need any milk between 3-4PM ? (last time you BF her in daytime) until breakast so your body is kind to you and not producing at 7PM!!!! If you want to feed at 7PM you need to express every night at 7PM and the first few nights you'll get very little but your body will ALSO realise it needs to produce again so it will. You can keep the 1oz... add 4 or 5 nights expressed milk together and you may well get a whole bottle! You'd be amazed!

ELLIELULU · 17/08/2006 22:33

i didnt last feed her at 3/4pm today
this is the times today as i jot it down, 5.30am, 8.00am, 10.20am, 12.50pm, 3.10pm 4.55pm 6.30pm plus then she will have bottle at 10.30pm when i wake her (or should i ) so in effect my body should produce all through day as ive fed her 7x,s through day,
as ive expressed an 1oz before will there still be milk for her to feed off now or would i wait the hour for refill ?

So in effect she gets her bottle at 1:30 PM... how much is in that bottle ?
Fundamentally what i explained below still works ... from 7PM to 7AM your body does not realise it needs to produce milk... is that correct ?
You would need to express at 10:30PM

ELLIELULU · 17/08/2006 22:41

in the bottle of formula she has is 200 mlsjust over 6 ozs and she takes anything from 4 to 6 on a good night

so i need to express after bottle given so my body know to produce for evening times? should i express in day as well as i think feeding her and express would be a acrobatic act as i need to hold leccy b pump and its a tad noisy so think would put her off feeding at same time

Just express when ou are bottle feeding so that your body knows you need to produce at 10PM.
You might be able to drop that feed too though.... 4oz isn't much !
