How do I stop him gulping?!

Put a recent thread under health as ds has started to get really really bad wind, enough to stop him feeding more than 1 - 2oz at a time! Hence within 1 - 2 hrs he is screaming for food again. We think that the problem may be him gulping his food (having eliminated just about everything else we could think of). He has seen GP and HV - no thoughts from them other than there is nothing underlying his wind problem. When he feeds you can actually hear the food hitting his stomach! He is bottle fed and there have been no changes in the bottles we use or teats etc. He is now 17 weeks. The only thing we did try about a week ago when this started was to not wake him for his 2.30am feed but let him wake when he was hungry. Only problem - until this week he has never asked for food just sucks his fingers - not much help when dh and I are asleep! Any suggestions on how to stop this gulping would be appreciated as I feel we have got into rather a vicous circle at the moment.

Thanks for your help twiglett. During the night he doesn't gulp nearly as badly but has a steady rhythmical suck and swallow. I might try a slower teat for times he is awake and leave him the medium for night times. With regard to waking him to feed, he has had a lot of feeding problems and is really quite underweight for his age, off the centile charts. We were concerned that if he was unable to add the volume he should have taken at the night feed to his daytime ones, he would not put on weight as well. At only 10lbs perhaps we were being a bit ambitious!
