Restarting breast feeding

My DD is 2 weeks old I stopped BF at 10 days because my milk hadn't come through. Was getting enough wet nappies, DD became distressed was on for breast for 40 mins every hour resting for 10 mins and then crying and only going back on the breast would sooth. DH wasn't supportive of BF in the end because DD was distressed and MW's were recommending formula which make her more content. SHe turns to the breast at feeds, which breaks my heart. Another thread I asked for advice on ssuggested starting again and asking for advice. Sorry very emotional tonight. Any advice

try going to bed with her and just letting her feed when she wants? Saw your other thread and her feeding every hour can be quite normal for a newborn. With my 1st baby i felt like that in very early days, but it does get easier, they get more efficient at feeding.

Clare - I posted on the other thread....
I am a BF counsellor... a few thoughts...

  1. Is there a lactation consultant (or a BF clonic near you)... theu would spend the time with the correct info to support you
  2. You can get a private consultation with a lactation consultant - search UK lower down on the page - they charge from £60 to £100 but they are very thorough.... and it is still cheaper than the £650/year bottle feeding cost.
  3. Read this article it's not very long
  4. Mention Domperidone at clinic/LC but they would recommend once they were convinced taht you indeed have a supply problem.

10 days is NOT tat far back... it may take a while for massive progress to be made but you can always mix feed!

If this is what you wnat... take it one day at the time and seek help.
BF counsellors and LC want to help and none of us will force you to do anything!

Clare I am really glad to see this thread. The thought of her turning to feed made me cry so hope you are letting her suckle still. Please get some dedicated advice tomorrow as I think that your MW has made things worse for you all.
My cousin had a simliar experience with her MW and by the time I got there her DS was only taking bottles. It has inspired me to do my bf counsellor training which I start next month.

Can I just clarify - you stopped bfeeding 4 days ago?

If you get the right advice now and there aren't insurmountable biological supply reasons you can't bfeed, I'm sure you can do it.

I agree that you could re-start the feeding - go for it! It is sooo worth it.

Does anyone know of any instances of women, e.g. wet nurses, breastfeeding without ever having had a baby? I know it sounds unlikely - but one of my dogs adopted a litter of newborn pups when their mother died at birth and she fed them all until they were weaned. She had never had a litter herself but didnt seem to have any problem producing milk in response to suckling. I know its only a dog but we are all mammals !

mytholmroyd yes it is possible to induce lactation. women who adopt and have never had children of their own can induce lactation, takes a lot of commitment and effort but not impossible.

Hi Laundry I'm letting DD suckle when she's hungry. She stays for 5 minutes I've offered her other breast and again she only stays 5 minutes. I then give her formula. I've been very emotional all day about it all. I'm having lots of skin to skin time with DDand bathing together. Going to see BF counsellor tomorrow.

You know my second is a very fast feeder so she will be getting milk even with 5mins each side. How much formula is she taking after a feed?
Keep going and let us know how you get on with the counsellor tomorrow....
Does she sleep with you too?
(baby not the counsellor!)
