Valium and breastfeeding?

I've slipped a disk and because I can't be admitted due to looking after vomiting children, my GP has given me Valium.

She said it is okay to use short-term while breastfeeding.

Is it okay? I had always thought this was a no-no. Baby is a big and chunky 10 months.

have you been prescribed diazepam, if so, then iirc its contra indicated in breast feeding.

Quootiepie · 16/08/2006 16:14

Im on 2mg diazepam, MAX. of 3 daily and im BFing...

zippitippitoes · 16/08/2006 16:19

well looking on net docotr and the med guide they categorically say diazepam is contr indicated in breast feeding

Quootiepie · 16/08/2006 16:21

what does that mean?

zippitippitoes · 16/08/2006 16:24

diazepam

scroll down

I read that... but the doctor looked it up on her database and said 2mg (smallest dose) was ok... worst thing was making baby alittle drowsy. Hmmmm..

morningpaper · 16/08/2006 16:44

That's what my Doc said too Quootie

She prescribed 5 mg but I've been splitting them and won't take more than 7.5 a day

Could do with a drowsy baby TBH ...

I must report that the baby SLEPT VERY WELL last night!

My boobs were exploding when I woke up though.

Hopefully you slept well too!

I did do a bit of searching round about the valium and breastfeeding..I think it is the drowsiness which is the concern, so if you had a very young baby there might be a theoretical risk that it would be too sleepy to feed properly and that would cause problems.

Once they become strapping great things then it doesn't seem such a bad thing!

zippi

She is 10 month and only weighs 5lb less than my FOUR YEAR OLD!!!!!!!!!!

So she is definitely strapping.
