3 month old slipping down the centiles

Hi all. Have been taking DS to get weighed about once a month and he was going along the 75th centile. However yesterday at his weigh in he was down to just above the 50th.

Anyone else had this? HV said to feed him for longer but he's always been a five minute guzzler and then he's off. She said it could be because he's more active and burning cals - he doesn't sleep in the day unless in pram or car so does tend to be wriggling quite a lot!

Dropping (or going up) one or two centiles is normal. Not all babies will stick to an exact line - they are just averages.

Shame you have felt worried by this. Feeding him for longer is not the best way to increase intake (and your HV should know this). Feeding him more often is.

But it's highly unlikely there is any need to do anything :)

A fall of up to 2 centiles is within normal, anyway. A healthy, thriving baby who's develping well may easily change centiles.

Thanks both - feel better now. Smile

We are the same...but Our LO has fallen from 9th to 0.4th and we have been really worried. However we are getting to grips with the fact that he's just a slow grower at the moment, and he seems happy and is developing well in all regards. Or HV has tried to convince us to start weaning at 16 weeks! Total nonsense.

We're just going to keep an eye on him and make sure he doesn't slip further, and if he does we'll ask for a referral.

Its hard, but try to relax and just think that your LO is growing at an individual rate and that you'll just keep an eye on it but try not to worry x

Absolutely right that this is pretty normal and probably nothing to worry about - but in case it helps, here are some things to look out for:

The videos are great! And also just the reminder to go easy on yourself and that there could be various factors at play.

Hiya just to reassure again, my DD dropped from 50th to 25th at about 3 mo. old as well, and health visitors aren't worried at all totally normal. She just has to stick to her new centile line now. xxx
