Newborn - day 3 - no poo?

I'm struggling to remember what DS1 was like, but I'm pretty sure he was doing more than one poo a day by this point. DS2 was born on Monday and had a dirty nappy Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday morning but nothing since - they've also still been black/brown and sticky. Is that ok still by this point?

He is breastfed but is a newborn - the days between poos thing only applies to older babies after the first month or so I think.

No poo at 3 days is not good news and always warrants investigating.

You need to ask someone to watch you feed, and get your baby weighed.

All may be well - it's perfectly possible your baby and the feeding are just fine.

But it is sensible to take steps to check.

panjalina, a baby at 3 days is definitely not constipated unless there is something majorly wrong.

He was weighed today and weight loss seems to be ok (6%) - I did mention to the midwife that his poo was still black/brown and she said that might be because he's jaundiced? She didn't specifically ask how many/how often.

Yes, weight loss within normal. Presume he was weighed naked on digital scales?

Yep, naked on digital scales. He seems to be feeding well (is alert and asking for feeds) but has a tongue-tie. Midwife is back on Saturday so do you think it is ok to wait until then? He is weeing too.

Same happened with my ds. Nothing from day 3 to day 6 so took him to paediatric assessment unit. They checked him said his tummy felt ok and advised massaging in clockwise direction. Went back two days later when the doctor gave him a glycerin pessary. Poo explosion a few minutes later. And then again. And then normal.
Doc advised to mix 1tsp of cane sugar in 1tbsp of water to give to him as a laxative next time.

We had exactly the same and lots of (annoying) asvice from the bf helpline later I was terrified we were going to end up back in hospital. Asked the mw and she was totally c

Cool about it - 'it's very common'. We topped up with formula as there was other issues with my milk not coming in properly and hey presto on day 6 poo arrived.

TheScience - a visit on Saturday should be fine.

In the absence of any other signs of poor milk transfer, then no poo at times in the first days is not a worry....it's a sign to look more carefully at what's happening, to weigh the baby, and to keep an eye on things.

Ginger, your milk had not come in properly and your baby was not feeding sufficiently well as a result - when she got more milk, 'it' happened :) Totally explainable.

What would the annoying advice be from the helpline???? What do you expect them to say? No poo is something to raise with the midwife, because it can be a sign of the baby not feeding well (true, in your case), and certainly babies do end up back in hospital for this.

We've had a couple of poos today and more reassuringly yellow looking too.
