Hope to breast feed new baby, but will my toddler want the same?

Just wondering if my 17mth ds will want to breast feed once I start feeding my newborn. Ds was breast feed for 15 weeks so he probably won't remember it. But what will happen when it comes to feeding new buba? will he want to try and join in? What do I do if he tries to feed to?

I bf dd1 until she was 10 weeks and I intended to bf dd2. Dd1 was 16 months when dd2 as born. Dd1 just sat mesmorised when I bf dd2 and just poked my boobs - she never tried to have a go herself.

Lol burstinbug i was wondering the same thing about my toddler.

So hopefully I won't have any problems with ds wanting the same. I guess he's going to feel really left out though if I have baby stuck to me a lot of the time.

BB lots of children this age do breastfeed, so it wouldn't be unusual for your ds to want to try. If you feel ok about it (or can at least pretend for a minute ) I would let him try if he wants to - he will probably have his curiousity assuaged and it will prevent any jealousy about the baby having something he's not allowed. Of course some people do feed both a baby and a toddler at the same time, including several posters on here, so you never know, you may find you both like it.

I think kayzed's suggestion is good if you don't feel feel happy with him trying to breastfeed. It's mostly just curiosity and not wanting to miss out, I think.

my ds was 2,11 when dd was born. i bf him til he was 13m, but he doesn't remember it. he has always been vv interested in how dd drinks. i let him see exactly what she was doing, where the milk came from, what it looked like etc and this openness seemed to satisfy his curiosity. he asked does one boobs have milk and one have blackcurrant? which made us rofl.
we are now 6m on, and we sometimes joke, if he says he wants a drink when i'm busy feeding - i (jokingly) offer him the other boob- he's never been actually tempted.

I think i'll be ok if he wants to try at the breast, it will just be a bit odd. If not, he can always have a taste from a glass as Kayzed mentioned

Burstingbug - dd1 has never tried to feed - I would imagine that she wouldn't be able to latch even if she tried - esp now as she is 22 months.

Slight aside, I thought it would be a nightmare trying to bf a newborn with a toddler - but it has been far better/easier than I anticipated. I am still exc dd2 - and she is 26 weeks this week.

Hiya burstingbug, how u doing?? my sis-in-law stopped feeding her older dd when she found out she was pregnant and when her younger dd was born the older one did feel a little bit left out but she used to enjoy winding the baby after a feed, and used top pretend to feed and wind a soft toy. Its brilliant that my younger niece is 6 months my older one will wind my dd instead!!! saves my wrist aching! btw older niece was 17 mths when younger was born. so if you let your ds get involved and feel that he has a job it will boost his pride and help him get over initial shock of being the big bro!
