mastitis,how is it caused?

I am bf dd2 who is 6 days old. I bf ds2 till he was 2.5 and dd1 till she was 20 months so i know what i'm doing really.

Dd2 is a good feeder but i got really engorged on Friday and when she does feed she doesn't empty my boob.I am expressing enough before a feed so she gets a good latch and feeds well but falls asleep fairly quickly.I take her off and change nappy etc and she goes back on but my boob still feels fullish and hard still.
I'm not sure if this a problem or not but my other 2 fed left my boob feeling emptyish.

What if anything should i do?

She has loads of wet/dirty nappies and is content and settled 99% of the time.

TIA

If your really engorged have a warm shower and you'll get a let down that should prevent mastitis. The alternative is to express the missed feel and store it in the freezer for when you want a break or a day/evening out.

Its not necessarily it not being emptied. It can be a bockage in the pores or an infection.

Either way you feel like death if you've got it.

Best way out get your baby to feed alot. (This was the advice I received from Dr when I got it).

my DD had it when she was born so obviously she didnt breastfed!! so it was an infection

I had mastitis starting and you KNOW... I felt like death warmed up, had a 39 degree temp... ive never felt like that. And after DS fed, it just lifted. Its just your milk supply all over the place... mine took about 2 or 3 months to settle.

Thanks all who replied

My supply has settled down.I was producing/storing way too much milk and dd2 didn't need it all.I persevered over the weekend and last night and today she has been latching on a lot easier and feeding well. You wouldn't think this was my 3rd bf baby would you?
