Reflux experiences?

DS is 4 weeks, weaning off occasional bottles (top ups as tongue tied which is now hopefully remedied)
He's fussing at the breast half the time, good latch half the time. Falls asleep then wakes screaming, more posseting. Only having little cat naps, back goes rigid when he's upset. He's also farting A LOT!
Anyone recognize this? Is it normal? Dd had 'colic' for a few weeks and was ebf, but it was nothing like this!
Could it be reflux? Seeing health visitor at 2pm today but thought is see what the wealth of mn mums have to say first!

DS is 7 weeks and is doing exactly the same thing- along with grunting "trying to poo" noises. He's not constipated at all and it doesn't seem to get worse on his back-I think reflux does. He will wake up screaming and writhing but he does have period where he's fine so I don't think he's ill. HV just said he's gaining weight fine and is having lots of dirty nappies so he must be fine. What did your HV say??

HV said likely reflux although not common in bf babies... Said get some baby gaviscon from docs anyway just in case.

That is nonsense about bf babies not getting reflux...it has nothing to do with the milk they drink, it is that their little digestive systems aren't mature enough to keep the food down. Our LO has reflux and is doing well on ranitidine (stopped infant gaviscon as he's being sick much less).

It could be reflux but it sounds like wind too...our LO suffers like that with wind of burping and farting variety. If it is reflux, feeding and keeping them upright for half hour after feeds helps, and some tummy massage and cycling their legs helps with the farts!

I would ask to see your gp as your hv sounds a bit clueless (many are!). Our gp was great...he has three sons who all had reflux!

Gaviscon acts as a thickener so helps keep the food down...a nightmare to prepare if your LO is ebf...we had to get a syringe to get it in him, and that was such a faff. You can give it in with a feed if he is bottle fed. You'll need to get special teats though as it clogs normal ones. You can also get anti reflux formula but its just thickened milk so does the same as the gaviscon. Ranitidine acts on the acidity of the vomit, as our LO was screaming in pain when he was sick or laid on his back...

Ds3 was ebf and had reflux - total guff from your HV. Does your baby hiccup lots, move lots, jack knife their legs, have short sleeps but sleep better if held/in sling, make choking noises, have explosive poos as well as lots of wind? All of those can be signs of reflux. Go see gp - ds3 only improved on a combination of ranitidine and domperidone till weaning. There are things you can do to help in the meantime - never put him flat, always on an incline, keep bfing, make sure you wind him thoroughly, try going dairy free.

Ps infant gaviscon can cause constipation too - look out for that

DD was ebf and had silent reflux. Two weeks on medication and was a different baby.
