Introducing formula to EBF 6mth old

I'd like to start introducing formula to my EBF almost 6 mth old so I can get a break during day and hopefully get more sleep at night (still waking 3-4 times) Also she'll be starting nursery at 10/11 mths and I don't want to have to express at work. Was thinking one bottle during day and one in evenings. I'm a bit clueless on how to go about this;

  • Should I skip a bottle & go straight to sippy cup? Which type?
  • do I need to sterilise if she's 6mths? If so what steriliser? (Microwave one?)
  • how many oz should I give her?
  • will she be able to feed herself?
  • do I need to have a proper feeding routine? Starting solids as well obv so could I just offer her some formula with lunch?
  • will I feel engorged to start with? Atm she feeds for very short bursts every 2-3 hrs and comfort feeds to sleep for naps

Any tips/advice appreciated!

First question is does she take a bottle?

I know my hv said they should be off a bottle by 12 months but even though my dd likes drinking from a cup I don't think she would have a full feed.

My dd is now 6 months and I introduced a bottle to dd at 5 months and it took a few days offering her it at different times and in different positions until she got the hang of it.

She doesn't have one everyday but I do feel engorged when she has one - but if you did it regularly than I'm sure you would adjust.

I sterilise her bottle but not her cup and bowls/ spoons.

I warmed her milk when first introducing it but now she has it at room temperature.

Hopefully someone else can give proper advice.

Thanks Quin I haven't tried her on a bottle yet. What bottle do you use? My hv suggested giving her formula in a sippy cup when she was 4.5 mths which is why I thought about skipping bottle Confused Do you just give her some water in her sippy cup then with food?

Watching with interest. I've recently tried to introduce formula to my bf 8 month old. Selfishly want an occasional guilt free bottle of wine in the evening so no dire need. She absolutely won't entertain it and even gags at the taste. Honestly don't blame her though, it tastes foul.

just about starting now with almost 6 mo

i have just started feeding her and have started with baby rice mixed with formula, and expressing a bottle at weekends but she hasn´t really got the hang of sucking
