Local anaesthetics and breastfeeding?

I had a dental check-up today, was told that I need fillings, and have been given an appointment for a few weeks time for that.

DS2 is 4 months old and breastfed.

I expect that I will need a local anaesthetic before the dentist starts drilling holes in my teeth - does anyone know if it's okay to have a local anasthetic for a filling, and then breastfeed afterwards? Would the anasthetic pass into the breastmilk and affect DS2?

I know I should have asked the dentist this at the time, but this has only just occurred to me Blush

This is a very good information sheet, written by a pharmacist, who is knowledgeable on breastfeeding.

I wouldn't ask the dentist, they are not likely to be as well-informed really. If you want to discuss it with him or her, I would take the PDF with you.

I had local anaesthetic and steroid injections into a scar under general. Ds was 6 months at the time and was fine to bf as soon as I was capable of holding him.

totally fine. I mouth surgery just before Xmas and the consultant checked carefully. I have had a wisdom tooth out since and again no problems. Smile

I had local anesthetic in order to drain breast cysts while breast feeding and fed afterwards the surgeon did not seem at all concerned.

Just had a filling last week. No problems with anesthetic raised by the dentist. However I couldn't have the regular silver fillings because of bf. instead I was given softer white ones that may need to be replaced when I've stopped bf.
