Hi my son is 3months and im desperate to stop breastfeeding him but he will not suck on a bottle. Hes quite happy to roll the teat around in his mouth and taste the formula but wnt suck it.
He hsd his tongue tie snipped in december and z cold so hv said it could tske a while. But in the mean time hes not feeding off me for long and isnt putting on enough weight.
We have tried every bottle and every different teat going.
Any advice?

Maybe try a cup? Might be messy to start with but worth a go.
Also if he's not liking the taste of formula then try mixing it with BM and see if be prefers it.

Does he not take a dummy either.
I noticed some babies seem fussy about it.
Mine wouldn't take a dummy or bottle.
Not much help but we went straight to a soppy straw cup at 11m

Should say sippy

finleylily123 · 25/01/2014 12:22

Nope doesnt take a dummy. Tried every type.sucks his fist though.
Weve tried a doiddy cup without a lid and a sippy cup screws his face up. He likes the taste of the formula. The hv said if i had introduced the bottle before 5wks he would have taken it.
Ive had so many meltdowns coz of this it driving me insane.

You could try NUK bottles as the teats are meant to be the closest shape to a nipple when in the baby's mouth.
Bear in mind that there are 0-6 and 6-18 month teats, and then slow, medium and fast flow in each age.

Why are you so desperate to stop breastfeeding him? Is there anything you need/could address which would mean you could be comfortable carrying on?

This article explains very well how to mimic breastfeeding with a bottle, this may help you.

Is baby happy? Plenty wet/dirty nappies etc? If he is putting on weight and is fine in himself then that's normal, some babies don't put on as much as others so quickly, someone has to be on the smaller centiles somewhere in the country. Is that the only problem?

finley your HV is probably right that your DS would have taken a bottle before five weeks but that doesn't mean that he would have continued accepting it! My DD took a bottle of EBM beautifully from two weeks but started to refuse flatly at seven weeks once she was old enough to realise the difference. We've never since got her to take a bottle and she's now learning to use a cup. Don't beat yourself up.
