Help - what's making 2wo DS so poorly??

2wo DS is FF, for the last two weeks he has been feeding well fairly regularly and gradually increasing amounts, now taking around 3oz every feed.

Yesterday it was clear he was constipated, tender tummy, lots of tensing up and constant whimpering all day. He struggled to feed (I suspect as he was all bunged up) and was getting very hot and dehydrated. We managed to get him to take about 1oz of cooled boiled water by cup feeding and he had about 2oz of formula at each feed which seemed to cool him and settle him a little.

After spending all night awake with him whimpering he finally managed a massive poo about 6am. Since then he has done another massive one (sorry for tmi!) and another two smaller ones - he's clearing everything out now! He's feeding ok ish but not 3oz and not every 3 hours like before. He's still whimpering and seems to be in pain all the time.

I know FF babies are more prone to bouts of constipation but this seems very severe and the eventual clear out was mammoth! Could there be something else causing this? Other than giving a little water between feeds what can we do? I hate knowing he's in pain and there's nothing I can do! This just seems more than the normal slight constipation to me and not sure if its something I'm doing/not doing. He's clearly as exhausted as we are from the last 36 or so hours of no sleep and I don't want to keep putting him through this.

Sorry for the long rambling post, sleep deprived and worrying so thinking straight is harder than normal!! Any advice appreciated Smile

If he's only 2 weeks old, and getting hot and dehydrated, I would take him to the GPs, or contact your midwife team. Just in case it is something more than constipation.

I was debating that last night as he seemed very warm, but he had been snuggled on me for a while. As soon as he went on the mat for a nappy change and had a couple of ounces of milk he cooled right down again?

He seemed to get hot between feeds last night but would cool as soon as he was fed and his temp has been ok today?

I thought the GP would probably tell me a crying, constipated, 2wo in pain is perfectly normal and to just persevere with sips of water. Have I just answered my own question?!

Just concerned as he seems in so much discomfort

Definitely get to the the gp today. Could be absolutely fine, but why take the risk with such tiny baby? They will be happy to see you and would much rather see 20 perfectly fine two-week olds than miss one that isn't find and needs help.

Thanks - at least I feel reassured about wanting to get him checked over! Will take him in for a check up
