Picture of breastfeeding on magazine cover causes outrage in US

melpomene · 30/07/2006 09:11

CNN article

Babytalk, a US parenting magazine, put a picture of a breastfeeding baby on the cover, and received hundreds of letters complaining.

"'Gross, I am sick of seeing a baby attached to a boob,' wrote Lauren, a mother of a 4-month-old."

Another mother said that she shredded the magazine to avoid the risk of her 13 year old son seeing it.

Wrong,wrong,wrong (but I'm not surprised).
"A breast is a breast -- it's a sexual thing." Er, no it isn't, it prime purpose is to feed your infant.

vitomum · 30/07/2006 09:28

but unsuprising - but hey, i read a bit more of the article and they've also got 'lactivists' over there as well as the puiritanical nutters .

agalch · 30/07/2006 09:29

"gross i am sick of seeing a baby attatched to a boob"???????????

WTF?? What is the matter with people?

I am sick of reading articles like this.

As someone who has bf x2 and will be bf again any day now i cannot understand attitudes like this, especially from other women.

FanjoandZooey · 30/07/2006 09:32

I just showed my 3 year old the cover and he went "Awwwwwwww, that's nice"

Shame when a 3 year old has more sense than the world's most developed country, really.

tessasmum · 30/07/2006 09:39

Lovely, lovely picture. The baby's eyes say it all.
Shame the stupid people can't see it, possibly have their heads too far up their own a**es.

mrsnoah · 30/07/2006 09:42

oh my god.. I think the world has gone mad!!!
Dont you find it scary that it has come to this?
Begin immediate Campaign to get all baby mags to do similar front pages in attempt to educate freaks !

dewmeadow · 30/07/2006 09:42

ffs!! not surprised, nut how sad. The picture looked so beautiful to me, and my 2 yr old said, thats a baby like Rory drinking milk.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 30/07/2006 09:45

You are right FAZ. But he has not been subject to prejudice

I rather like this picture. Its Lucy Lawless (Xena Warrior Princess actress)

NZ breastfeeding campaign

The more pictures like this in the public domain (I dont just mean b/feeding leaflets) the better. I think that the "general public" are too sensitive to it.

People tend not to bat an eyelid at page 3 girls these days after all, do they?

spidermama · 30/07/2006 09:49

What a nasty, pervy attitude. Sickos and weirdos.

When some friends went to a them park with their toddlers (a boy and a girl) they took their toddlers t-shirts off for the wet, splashy ride. The attendant approached and said, 'Maam, is that a girl? Well then she has to put her top back on'.

Really wrong.

Callisto · 30/07/2006 10:24

What an idiotic and narrow-minded reaction and it all seemed to be women complaining -wtf was going on there? I thought the pic was lovely, and the one of Lucy Lawless how is very cool.

donnie · 30/07/2006 10:33

yup. boobs are wicked and evil.

Killing people in Iraq, Afghanistan and sending arms to the Israelis is good, though.

misdee · 30/07/2006 10:41

shredding the cover so a 13yr old doesnt see it? it not like you could see the nipple, it could just be a baby sucking on a pound of flesh.

i feel like hopping on a plane to the USA and breastfeeding dd3 all over the palce.

fuzzywuzzy · 30/07/2006 10:47

misdee I'll contribute towards your airfare......

Is b/f not as usual in the US as it is over here then??

LucyJu · 30/07/2006 10:48

Well said, Donnie.

What a sad world where it is perfectly aceptable to feed a baby highly processed milk from another animal via a plastic bottle - but feeding baby the natural, healthiest way causes shock, disgust and outrage.

misdee · 30/07/2006 10:50

quick lets start a whip round and [places to visit to breastfeed? dh has suggested central park, statue of liberty..........

i would actually like to do it, better buy a lottery ticket............

fuzzywuzzy · 30/07/2006 10:55

Empire State building,
Times Square.
All over Floridas disney world...

There's nothing for it Misdee you'll just have to do all of America state by state b/f your baby....

misdee · 30/07/2006 10:56

i thought you may say that. i better get passports sorted

will it bew more shocking that i am b/f an older child and not a newborn.

melpomene · 30/07/2006 11:00

Incidentally we went to Orlando when dd1 was 18 months and I bfed in public a few times. We didn't get any hassle.

When I was living in Singapore there was an outcry over someone's objection to breastfeeding in the restaurant of the American Club. As the mother said, "Everyone else in the family was eating". I think some mothers staged a 'feed-in' there.

I just don't get this attituted to feeding. Of course you don't completely strip off in the middle of the street - normally to feed you don't need to reveal much breast anyway coz there is a baby/child sucking away and you are dressed.

I used to get some funny looks when feeding DS2 on planes when he was older: "Other side now, Mummy. That one's finished".

edam · 30/07/2006 11:10

Thought it was a good article. But how sad that some idiots think like this, and expect other people to agree with them. Selfish prats. Encouraging that so many states are passing laws to protect b/f women, though.

trinityrhino · 30/07/2006 11:12

it really is sad that some people are sooo thick that they are bothered by that picture

it's a lovely picture
sad people

melpomene · 30/07/2006 11:16

I just found the Babytalk Magazine page here

They give an email address for comments on the cover picture: [email protected]

I am going to email them.

ffs i have tried desparately to get zoo and nuts off the shelves yet it is this that causes outrage - the world has gone mad

FairyMum · 30/07/2006 11:27

My God, have the Americans not got better things to complain about? I think so!
