Weight gain, is it a problem?

My boy is 4 weeks now, he is EBF and aside from the odd few struggles with a forceful let down and a bit of fussing has generally been a good eater. He's still not in a routine as such, some days eating every half hour or so, normally going 2 hours or so between feeds and at night. I'm demand feeding him so he pretty much sets the schedule!

Feeding sessions can last anywhere from a few mins to half hour +

Anyway, he was born at 7lb 13oz and has had good weight gain since, he didn't lose any. He was weighed again yesterday and is now 11lb 2oz.

I was really pleased but keep getting the odd negative comment about how he 'shouldn't' have gained that much and that I am overfeeding him. I'm getting fed up of these comments as they make me worry every time that there is something wrong with what we are doing? I worry that I'm giving him too much or that letdown/ amount I'm producing is an issue.

Is 3lb in a month a problem and should I be concerned/changing our feeding?

We are working so hard at our BF and I was proud he was gaining so well at first but now doubting myself again and I need a bit of handholding!

TIA

Who's making the comments, hippie?

His weight gain is at the high end, but it is not abnormal at all....weight gain can be fast and then slow down as the weeks go by. In a healthy, bf baby, there should be no concern at all.

My dd gained 2lb by her 10 day check! Neither of mine lost any weight, and were exclusively breastfed. My hv was very supportive and told me to just keep going. Try to ignore comments about overfeeding, the patterns of feeding you describe sound spot on.

Ds1 used to gain 1lb+ a week, also ebf. I used to love the "we should bottle your breast milk" comments from the Mws.
Did used to get embarrassed when people assumed he was 12mths old when he was 6mths. He has been skinny as you like since he could run.

This sounds like my 3m old. He was about half a pound heavier than yours at birth, and was 11lb 4 by 3/4 weeks.

I also feed on demand, and he's tracked the 91st percentile since. My HVs aren't concerned, and say that once he starts moving he'll probably drop a little. I think it sounds like you're doing a marvellous job, and growing a healthy baby. Good for you Smile
